World Cup Match 11 Squad Comparison

After suffering a huge defeat in their opening game of the World Cup 2019, Pakistan finally ended their 11-match losing streak defeating England at Nottingham. Sarfaraz Ahmed and co. looked high on enthusiasm and played with confidence that was evident in the field. They were aggressive with the ball and very balanced in their approach to batting in the middle overs, building partnerships as 3 of their middle order batsmen scored half centuries.

Bowling all-rounder Shadab Khan did well for his 2 for 63, picking up crucial wickets of Jason Roy and Joe Root at crucial times. While the batting all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez delivered a perfect all-round performance scoring 84 with the bat and picking up 1 for 43 in 7 overs with the ball. Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir were accurate with their line and length and got good pace and bounce off the track.

Going into this match, Pakistan will have the momentum on their side, also a great bowling attack with their pacers in form means a tough day for Sri Lankan batsmen. Unless Sri Lankan batsmen show strength and will to survive, Pakistani bowlers are likely to dominate given the current scenario.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka registered their 1st win of the tournament defeating Afghanistan as they successfully defended 187 in a rain affected match. Sri Lanka got off to a good start batting first with a 92-runs opening partnership. However, their middle order fell like a deck of cards once again, as they went from 144-2 to 180-8. Kusal Perera was the top scorer with 78 runs opening for Sri Lanka and was the 9th man to get out.

However, the bowlers did a great job for Sri Lanka making a comeback between overs 5 to 14 of the Afghanistan innings. Sri Lanka picked 5 wickets for 23 runs in these overs, exposing Afghanistan middle order as was part of their game plan in the 2nd innings. Nuwan Pradeep picked 4 for 31 in 9 overs and was the most impactful bowler for Sri Lanka. While Malinga who went for runs early in the innings came back to clean the tail and finished 3 for 39 in 6.4 overs. A great effort put by the bowlers must have given them a much required confidence and lift their hopes up for the way ahead.

There is still plenty of room for improvement in bowling and especially in the batting department. They will be up against Pakistan, a side who have recently ended their drought of ODI wins, and are aggressive in the field and have their batsmen in form. Bowling against Pakistan will not be easy, as there is not much room for error when bowling to the likes of Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohammad Hafeez.

Our Prediction for Pakistan vs Sri Lanka

Pakistan are likely to win this match

Sri Lankan openers will be under pressure to give a good start. If Sri Lanka loses wickets at the top in the 1st power-play Pakistan will not leave any window of opportunity open for Sri Lanka to make a comeback. Pakistan will eye to try more aggressive field placements against a weaker Sri Lankan batting, and continue their bowling form.
