ICC World Cup Match 43 Squad Comparison

Pakistan, though still alive in the World Cup 2019 with a mathematical chance of making it to the semi-finals, are looking at an almost impossible equation. Pakistan will be eliminated if Bangladesh opts to bat first, while if Pakistan choses to bat, they would need to beat Bangladesh by 311 runs after scoring 350. Pakistan may not be looking at pulling off something this, rather focus on winning the last match and finish their campaign with pride.

This team was a bit late to the party as in the early stages of the tournament Pakistan went around wearing the ‘unpredictable’ tag, lacking consistency in performances. Their loss to West Indies in the opening game was a huge one that affected their Net Run Rate, and recovering from that shock in terms of NRR was never going to be easy. Pakistan batting order struggled to chase 228 runs against Afghanistan in the last match. Prior to that, they had registered convincing victories against New Zealand and South Africa igniting the fire and hopes of the Pakistan fans.

They played South Africa at this venue and scored 308 batting first. More recently, Australia scored 243 and 285 runs batting first at this ground and defended it successfully. Knowing Pakistan’s strength lies in the bowling department, batting first would be an advantage for them. Babar Azam is in good form and had scored a fifty at this ground along with Haris Sohail against South Africa. While the pacers Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi, Wahab Riaz can pick wickets in all phases of the innings, they would need to pull off a miracle spell if Pakistan were to qualify for the semi-final.

Bangladesh are out of the race to the semis and they have pride to play for in this match. Their batting performance against Australia was a great one as they scored 333 chasing a target of 382 against Australian bowling attack. Mushfiqur Rahim scored a hundred batting at number 4, while Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah scored fifties. This was without Shakib al Hasan staying around long and playing a big innings.

While Shakib al Hasan has been in the best form and has scored 542 runs at an average of 90.33 in this World Cup and has picked 11 wickets. He’s picked same number of wickets as that of Yuzvendra Chahal but slightly better economy rate, and is just 2 runs behind Rohit Sharma, who is the top run getter in the tournament so far. Mustafizur Rahman is in good touch and picked 5 wickets against India. He can use execute the slower delivery well enough, while Soumya Sarkar has been the go to man for Bangladesh captain to get a breakthrough. Bangaldesh’s chase against West Indies was a clinical one as they went into attacking mode right from word go. However, that was difficult to repeat against India and would be a challenge against Pakistan’s pace bowlers as well.

The best chance of winning this game for Bangladesh would to be bat first and put runs on the board. Pakistan’s middle order tends to collapse just when they seem to be cursing to the target and this was seen in the last match. With Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib in their arsenal, Bangladesh bowling attack can make Pakistan batting struggle and fight for every single run.

Our Prediction for Pakistan vs Bangladesh

Pakistan are favourites to win this match

While Bangladesh are no more the underdogs and have what it takes to defeat any team in the world, Pakistan’s bowling attack is lethal. It will take some class and near to perfect execution to survive the bowling attack and it would be even tougher to chase against them.

Given Babar Azam’s batting form, if one of the openers gets going at the top, Pakistan can get off to a good start. A few good batting performances in the middle from the likes of Haris Sohail, Mohammad Hafeez or the skipper can get Pakistan to a good enough total to defend on this ground. Toss, however will be crucial and if Bangladesh wins and opts to bat first, Pakistan will stand eliminated.
