ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers Match 23 Squad Comparison

After two successive wins, Oman suffered its first defeat of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2019 against Ireland chasing 184 runs. Oman’s first two wins against UAE and Hong Kong were characterized by great bowling performances restricting the opposition to 108 and 102 runs. While these were low totals and Oman chased them down easily with 7 wickets in hand on both occasions, Ireland posed a great challenge with both bat and ball.

Fayyaz Butt, Bilal Khan, and Aamir Kaleem were wicketless against Ireland, while Khawar Ali could only pick 1 wicket for 28 runs. Oman’s bowlers failed to recreate their previous performances and ended up conceding 183 runs for 3 wickets. Khawar Ali was top scorer for Oman chasing this target with 50 off 34 balls opening the innings for the side. While Aqib Ilyas and Zeeshan Maqsood were out soon at number 3 and 4 making things worse for Oman in the chase. Oman finished with 148-9 in 20 overs and lost the match by 35 runs. However, Oman will be eyeing to bounce back against Nigeria and get their bowling form back on track while expecting the batsmen to score big and build significant partnerships in the middle.

Nigeria has lost 2 in 2 matches so far in this tournament. One of the positives for Nigeria in their last match was the bowling. After conceding 184 runs against Jersey for just 4 wickets bowling first, Nigeria restricted Canada in the next match to 159-7 in 20 overs. Abiodun Abioye and Chima Akachukwu picked 2 wickets each while Daniel Ajekun was economical with figures of 1 for 23 in 4 overs. Sylvester Okpe also picked 1 wicket for 19 runs in 3 overs.

While some of their bowlers helped restrict Canada to a score under 160 with a good economy along with consistent wickets in the innings, the batsmen failed in their job to get Nigeria off to a good start. While Leke Oyede had scored 39 in the previous match, he was out for a duck off the 1st ball against Canada, while the other opener Daniel Ajekun was out for 2 runs. While the number 3 and 4 batsmen scored 27 and 39 in the chase, next batsmen at 5, 6, and 7 were out for below 10 runs and Nigeria finished with 109-8, losing by 50 runs. In the first match against Jersey, Nigeria had finished 115-7 chasing 185 runs.

Our Prediction for Oman vs Nigeria

Oman is favorite to win the match

There’s not much of a competition when Oman takes on Nigeria given how the two teams have performed in their previous matches. Oman’s won 2 in 3 games so far in the tournament with some good bowling and batting performances while Nigeria has failed at all fronts except for a few bowlers who did well in their last match against Canada. The top betting sites in India have a clear favorite in Oman at 1.03 odds to win this match.
