World Cup Match 3 Squad Comparison

New Zealand

Kane Williamson will lead the New Zealand side in the World Cup 2019. He was part of the New Zealand’s 2015 World Cup team that reached the final. 3 batsmen in the top order, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, and Ross Taylor featured in the previous edition of the tournament along with 2 bowlers, Tim Southee and Trent Boult.

This World Cup, New Zealand has some great additions to the squad with 3 batting all-rounders, Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme and James Neesham. While Neesham and Grandhomme are good bowling options, Munro may not be used to bowl 10 overs. This squad includes uncapped wicket-wicket-keeper batsman Tom Blundell along with 2 others – Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls. Looking at all the batting options, New Zealand look strong enough to cross 320 runs mark, whether they bat first or second. They’ve got batsmen in the middle with great hitting abilities to finish the innings on a high note.

Mitchell Santner, a slow-left arm bowling all-rounder is also handy with the bat. Apart form the two star bowlers, the bowling attack includes Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Ish Sodhi. Lockie Ferguson has great pace, though his action during the IPL was a problem, getting in the way of bowling at right places. There’s some correction Ferguson would need to do if he looks to make the most of his pace on English tracks.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka hasn’t had a great year, losing quite many matches and series to visiting teams at their home. Though Sri Lanka may perform well on English pitches, with their bowlers. Among the batters, skipper Dimuth Karunaratne Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Perera will have the onus to give good starts and convert them into big partnerships at the top.

If the Sri Lankan top order manages to build big partnerships, all-rounders in the middle including Angelo Matthews and Thisara Perera can take it a notch up and finish things off perfectly for his side. More than often, Angelo Matthews had to carry the entire Sri Lankan innings on his shoulders when the top order failed as was seen in the Asia Cup 2018. However, the conditions in England are quite different, the pace offered by the pitch, and the fast outfield are conducive for batting.

Jeevan Mendis, a bowling all-rounder is also in the squad, along with Thisara Perera. Sri Lanka has 4 batting all-rounders, among which Isuru Udana has bowled really well in T20 leagues. It will be interesting to see how the skipper uses Udana. Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Pradeep will lead the pace attack.

New Zealand are a much stronger side on all fronts, and their players are in great touch. While Sri Lanka on the other hand have struggled in the past year to get their team together and win matches.
