Johan Cruijff ArenA, Amsterdam
Netherlands 3 – 0 Germany
The Oranje welcome Germany to the Amsterdam Arena knowing that three points are vital if they are to stay in with a shout in this Nations League group.
The Netherlands have failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments and even with the talent in their squad have looked nowhere near the level of the formidable Dutch sides of the past. Ronald Koeman took over from Dick Advocaat at the start of the year and although results have not all gone his way there does seem to be a little more belief in the squad now.
Germany have seemed unsettled since Mesut Özil announced his retirement from international football after criticism levelled at him following the disaster of a World Cup in the summer. The results this year have not been good and Joachim Löw will be looking at the upcoming Nations League matches as a chance to see 2018 out on a high.
Ronald Koeman’s side lost their Nations League opener in France and will know that they must get something out of their home games to have any chance of avoiding relegation to League B. Only a late winner from Memphis Depay gave the Netherlands a victory at home to Peru in the last international break and they will need to up their game if they are to get anything against Germany.
Germany ran out 2-1 winners against Peru last month but were unable to use home advantage against France in their Nations League match – having to settle for a point in Munich. Scoring goals has been somewhat of a problem recently and if Thomas Müller is unable to regain his form it may be down to the attacking midfielders to inspire victory in Amsterdam, but a low-scoring one – 1-0.
- Germany to win 3.50 – BET NOW
Germany may not be firing on all cylinders but the Netherlands have looked unimpressive for a while now. This may be a must win for the home side but expect Germany to soak up Dutch pressure and then score on the counter attack.
- Total goals under 1.5 4.33 – BET NOW
Both sides will be desperate for the three points in the Amsterdam Arena but that may result in the Netherlands and Germany forgetting the basics. Germany have not scored more than two in a match all year and it would not be a surprise if they were to win this one by a single goal.

Head to Head
Netherlands v Germany is one of European football’s more intense rivalries with a fairly even record over the years. But the Netherlands haven’t beaten their neighbours since 2002 and haven’t won this fixture in Amsterdam in over 18 years.
- The Netherlands have not been in the best of form in recent years and have failed to beat Germany in their last five attempts.
- Germany’s exit at the group stage of this summer’s World Cup was the first time they had not progressed from the opening round since 1938.
- The Netherlands made it to the final of successive World Cups in 1974 and 1978 – losing to the host nation on both occasions.
- If he plays in all four of Germany’s remaining matches this year Thomas Müller will join an impressive group of players with 100 international caps.
