Man City 2  –  1 Newcastle

Predictions |  Odds | Statistics

Guardiola welcomes Newcastle to Manchester looking to get back to winning ways after dropping points at Wolves.

Although Newcastle have just one point so far this season Rafa Benitez will not be panicking quite yet. A tough start that includes Spurs, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in their first five games means that the Spaniard will be looking to September and October’s matches as point-winning opportunities.

Man City were nowhere near their best against Wolves and endured a frustrating afternoon unable to break down a resolute opponent. City enjoyed 71% of the possession but still only came away from Molineux with a point and Pep Guardiola will expect more against Newcastle.

Although they were the home side against Chelsea in their last game, Newcastle played extremely defensively and almost succeeded with Joselu looking like he had grabbed a draw in the 83rd minute – only for DeAndre Yedlin’s own goal to hand Chelsea the points four minutes later. Expect more unadventurous tactics from Benitez in this one.

Although Sergio Aguero was hardly unused last season – he scored 30 goals in 39 appearances –Guardiola seems to have renewed faith in the Argentinian as his main goal threat. Three goals in three games makes it look like he is right to do so and City could win this one 4-0.

Man City to win to nil at 2.75 BET NOW

Vincent Kompany had a fairly torrid time against Wolves and it was not surprising that City conceded against Nuno Espirito Santo’s well-drilled side. Expect a different outcome here with City heavily favoured and Newcastle on a damage limitation exercise, having scored only twice in their first three games of the season.

In their only other home game this season City put six goals past Huddersfield. Expect more of the same against Newcastle whose defensive line will be weakened further if Jamaal Lascelles is left out of the starting XI once again.

Head to Head

Aguero will be looking forward to Newcastle’s visit as he scored a hat-trick in their last home fixture as City ran out 3-1 winners. They also triumphed in the match at St James’ Park by a goal to nil. It has been 18 years since Newcastle won at Manchester City’s ground.

  • Showing how recent history has skewed the record for this fixture, Newcastle have actually won more games between the two clubs over the years – 71 to 67.
  • The last time Manchester City lost a home league match against anyone other than their crosstown rivals was December 2016 when Chelsea beat them 3-1 and both Aguero and Fernandinho were sent off in injury time.
  • Sergio Aguero is Manchester City’s all-time leading goal scorer with an incredible record of 204 goals in just 296 appearances.
  • Newcastle’s fastest ever recorded goal was recorded in 2003 when Alan Shearer scored after just 10.4 seconds – against Manchester City.
