Liverpool 1 – 0 Brighton
Jürgen Klopp will be hoping for another big win as he welcomes Chris Hughton’s Brighton to Anfield.
Liverpool started the season where they left off by relentlessly attacking and scored four goals against a shell-shocked West Ham side. After seeing off Crystal Palace, they now face Brighton and will be looking to boost the goals for column once again before some tougher fixtures including Spurs, Chelsea and Man City.
With many predicting the Seagulls to go straight back down last season, their almost comfortable last few games of the campaign were well deserved for Chris Hughton and his team. But this season has not started well. Facing Liverpool and Manchester United in the first few games was always going to be tough and they need to find some form soon to get this season going. Gaining on the momentum of beating United is crucial.
Mo Salah has shown that last season was no fluke and looks like he could get another Golden Boot if he keeps his current form up. Ably assisted by Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – along with new signings such as Xherdan Shaqiri – it looks like Anfield can expect to enjoy more goals this year.
Chris Hughton has given his summer signings the chance to impress but would have been concerned by not recording a single shot on target in the season opener at Watford. It obviously got better against United – much better – but Liverpool are a much more cohesive team than Jose Mourinho’s unhappy lot. Goals against the Merseyside Reds might be harder to come by, and stopping them harder still. Liverpool to win 4-0 is not out of the question.
1 x 2 Odds
With an attacking trio such as Salah, Firmino and Mane betting on goals seems almost too obvious. Brighton are a very well organised side defensively but with Liverpool seemingly in the mood for racking up a big win it could be a long afternoon for the Seagulls defence, which conceded twice even in victory last time out.
Liverpool put nine goals past Brighton in two games last season and it looks likely that the home side could repeat those kinds of results here. Brighton have done their best to bring in players to score goals but they will have no luck at Anfield.
Head to Head
Brighton started last season fairly well and it took until Liverpool’s visit to the Amex for their first real thrashing – Klopp’s men running out 5-1 winners. They scored another four in the return fixture but Brighton had assured Premier League survival by then and had already started celebrating.
- Brighton scored 34 goals in the Premier League last season with Glenn Murray top goal scorer with 12. Mo Salah scored 32 on his own to win the Golden Boot.
- Brighton’s Lewis Dunk and Mat Ryan both played every single minute of the Premier League campaign last season. The Seagulls were the only side to boast two players to do so.
- Lewis Dunk is also the unfortunate holder of another record from last season. The Brighton defender scored four own goals.
- Brighton have not beaten Liverpool since 1984 – and it is even longer since they won at Anfield. Their last away victory was in 1983.
