After winning their first match of TNPL 2019 in a super over, at Dindigul, Karaikudi has lost 4 matches in a row. In their recent match against TUTI Patriots, Karaikudi Kaalai bowlers did a good job picking up 4 wickets in 10 overs for just 62 runs. However, in the latter half of the innings, they failed to capitalize on the start and conceded 113 runs without a wicket. 176 is a huge target for Karaikudi as their batting is much dependent on Srikkanth Aniruddha, the captain. Few of the contributions in their chase were from opener L Suryaprakash (31), and RD Ashwin Kumar (30) at number 8.
However, none of the batsmen could strike a good partnership at the right moment, and couldn’t maintain the required run rate at any point in the innings. In their previous match, riding on Srikkanth Anirudha’s 98 runs inning, Karaikudi reached 158 batting first against Dindigul and lost by 10 wickets defending the total. V Aditya has an important role to play up the order along with skipper Anirudha. R Rajkumar and Maan Bafna also can chip in with crucial runs. Karaikudi can bat till number 6 if the top order gets off to a good start. However, their bowling hasn’t been impressive either, and the side has neither of the two departments to rely on.
Kovai Kings have lost 2 consecutive matches after their 2nd win of the season against Ruby Trichy Warriors at Tirunelveli. In these losses, their batting and bowling failed one at a time. While battling first against Chepauk Super Gillies, they were coming off a win defending in the previous match. A slow start from the openers and a collapsing middle-order led them to 115-9. Antony Das who had impressed with his batting in previous matches, couldn’t score anything significant. While Akkil Srinath was unbeaten on 18 off 15 balls.
The reliance on Shahrukh Khan and Abhinav Mukund to give a good start is evident now. For a few innings, the middle order and all-rounders that followed lower down the order helped the team reach a good total. However, the consistent failure of openers to strike a good partnership and put Kovai Kings in a strong position for the first half of the innings has put too much pressure and expectation from Antony Das and Akkil Srinaath. Pradosh Paul seems to be a good fit for number 3. He has been moved down the order at number 5, which could also have an effect on the momentum of the innings.
The experimentation with batting order continued in their last match against Madurai Panthers as Abhinav Mukund came in to bat at number 4, and scored a fifty chasing 196. S Ajith Ram was impressive with the ball picking up 4 for 17 and is likely to continue given the pitch conditions at Chennai. Pradosh Paul was replaced by Mohammad Ashik in the last game who was out for a duck. The Kings haven’t utilized their best resources – Antony Das and Akkil Srinath as they haven’t got the timing right. The top and middle-order just need to delay the arrival of these two batsmen to the crease until 13th over and score at a decent run rate of 7 or 8.
Lyca Kovai Kings are favourites to win this match
While Lyca Kovai Kings have better stats in their recent matches, even their losses as compared to Karaikudi Kaali, the match does seem evenly poised. Kovai Kings will start as favourites to win, however, toss will be crucial and can swing the game in favour of either of the teams.
Watch out for how betting sites shift their odds for both teams after the toss is made. For a venue with record of most wins for the team batting first, the odds tend to favor the team winning the toss and electing to bat first.
