ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers Play-Off Squad Comparison

Ireland, who finished at number 1 in the Group B points table and made it directly to the semi-final 1 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019. However, as we had discussed in our prediction for Ireland vs Netherlands 1st semi-final match, the lack of tough competition in the last few wins had an impact on the Ireland side. While Mark Adair was wicketless in the semi-final match for 31 runs in 4 overs, the top bowler, Craig Young was also the most expensive.

Boyd Rankin had the best economy with figures of 1 for 17 in 4 overs while Stuart Thompson and George Dockrell were pretty expensive bowling 2 overs each. Chasing a target of 159, a lot depended on the top order. However, Paul Stirling and Kevin O Brien couldn’t produce anything special for the team while Andrew Balbirnie was out for 8 off 12 balls at number 3. A very poor batting performance with just 4 batsmen having scored double digits, Ireland finished 137-9 and were knocked out of the race to the final.

Namibia seems comfortable defending totals in the knockout matches. They defeated Oman in the play-off 2 match defending 161 runs while in the 2nd semi-final, lost to Papua New Guinea chasing a small target of 131 runs. JJ Smit was the team top bowler for Namibia with 2 for 29 while Christi Viljoen and Gerhard Erasmus picked 1 wicket each. Though Bernard Scholtz was wicketless, Namibia put in a good bowling effort in restricting PNG to 130-5. In comparison with Ireland’s bowling in the 1st semi-final, Namibia’s bowling attack was more disciplined.

While Ireland gave away 11 extras, the Namibian bowlers accounted for only 4 extras. While opener Stephan Baard was the highest scorer for Namibia scoring 34 runs, he had a strike rate of 85.00. Another batsman with a strike rate of below 100 was Craig Williams at number 4 scoring 4 off 21 balls. In the last 2 matches, Namibia had at least one of the openers dismissed for a duck. It was Craig Williams and JJ Smit who turned around the innings in the 2nd play-off batting first against Oman.

Our Prediction for Ireland vs Namibia

Ireland is favorite to win the match

Ireland has a more experienced side than Namibia while both the teams are struggling on the batting front. Another common thing between the two teams is their dependency on the all-rounders. While it’s Craig Williams and JJ Smit for Namibia, Ireland relies on a few top-order batsmen and the rest of the batting line-up gives in once the opposition is through the top 4.

While the top betting sites in India have Ireland as a favorite to win, given the recent batting form of Ireland, a lot is dependent on the toss. Both teams would prefer batting first and defending a total rather than chasing even a 140-runs target.
