Our Prediction Ireland vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI
Afghanistan will win this game
The result of the 2nd ODI in the 3-Match series has surely got the punters excited. Ireland who had been through a miserable run in the T20 games and the first game of the ODI series suddenly found their form together and won the closely fought game convincingly by 3 wickets in the end. Few would have expected the hosts to win the 2nd ODI after series of poor performances in the last few months. For Afghanistan the team that has been a dream run on this tour so far several question marks were raised about their batting order and also of their fast bowling attack. With scores level in the 3-Match series the last ODI at Civil Service Cricket Club promises to be a thrilling encounter.
Asghar Afghan’s men have looked in great though all through the summer and carried good form the sub-continent coming into this tour. In the T20 series they dominated the hosts in all departments of the game and carried the same form into the first game of the ODI series winning it comfortably by 29 runs. The second game raised a few question marks about their batting with the top order failing to play the ball on its merit and being 4 down for 16 runs in the 9th over. Skipper Asghar would trust his men not to make the same mistakes and clinch the title in the third game.
Batting wise Afghanistan has a decent line-up with wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai making a formidable opening pair. Shahzad’s habit of throwing away his wicket is something the skipper may worry about and push him down the order. Rahmat Shah has shown great temperament in the last game and along with Hashmatullah Shahidi, Gulbadin Naib and skipper Asghar make a formidable line-up. In terms of bowling Afghanistan has one of the best spin attacks in the world with Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi having proved too good for the Irish attack. Even in the last game they made the Irish batsmen work hard to chase the small total. With some support from the fast bowlers they can easily run though the Irish batting order.
They were criticized widely over the last few weeks failing to defend their own fort but if the performance in the last game is anything to go by the team has lot of potential to match up against a strong Afghan side. Skipper William Porterfield would have been pleased to see his fast bowlers trouble the opponents and make good use of the conditions with the new ball. It was a clinical performance for the side with the ball but there are plenty of worries about the batting line-up as the Irish batsmen have shown the habit of suffering mini collapses and creating pressure upon themselves.
Porterfield would be worried about his own batting at the top of the order. Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie looked good in the last game and would like to continue with their form. O Brien brothers Niall and Kevin are both struggling with the bat and this makes the middle order look little fidgety and has been one of the reasons for their losses in the last few games. Simi Singh played the innings of his life to win it for the side. Tim Murtagh bowled incredibly in the last game while Boyd Rankin supported him well. With Andy McBrine and Singh in the supporting role the hosts would count their chances to win the final game.
Ireland played brilliantly in the last game but Afghanistan with its bowling attack still remains favourites to win the last game.
