Virat Kohli and his men would have least expected the West Indies to come hard at them in the ODI series after but in both the games the West Indian batsmen have given glimpse of the calypso magic of the yesteryears. While Kohli would be impressed with the way the batsmen have gone about their business in the two games so far the bowling has been ‘ineffective’ in both the games. None of the Indian bowlers have looked to have clues about the flow of runs as the visitors with their hard hitters have picked boundaries at will. Kohli would have to inspire his men to play well in the next game to ensure they can take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Indian has lived up to their batting reputation in both the games. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have been in good form while skipper Virat Kohli is in a different zone scoring hundreds at will. Ambati Raydu’s performance at No. 4 is also encouraging for the side. With Rishab Pant, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the lower middle order Kohli has great firepower to take on opposition’s bowling. It is their bowling which is giving worries to the Indian skipper with but with the return of Bhubaneswar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah the bowling looks strong again. The spin combination of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal hasn’t looked as effective as they were expected in these conditions. The skipper would hope his bowlers to get back to rhythm if they are to win the next game.
Jason Holder’s men would have been upset with the tie in the last game and it would have hurt them more than the loss in the 1st ODI. They controlled their run chase incredibly well only to falter in the last few overs ending up with a tie when they should have won comfortably. But the inspirational character that he is Holder would take this in his stride and be happy with the way his side is competing in the ODI series after having surrendered in the two Test Matches. He would take the field as a confident leader of men and would hope his bowlers tighten their purse and make it 1-1 in the upcoming game.
West Indian batting has impressed one and all in the two ODIs. While openers Chandrapaul Hemraj and Kieran Powell haven’t scored big runs as yet they have given positive start in both the games. Marlon Samuels looks the only weak link in the batting order while the young Shimron Hetmyer is reminding the good old days of West Indian cricket. Shai Hope and Holder have been rock solid and ever dependable as they are. The bowling is yet to impress in the series and have bad days in both the games. Kemar Roach hasn’t lived to his reputation while Ashley Nurse and Devendra Bishoo have started hitting the right patches. Holder has been impressive as ever and some tight bowling can see them script a win in the next game.
All said and done Indians will start as favourites to win the 3rd ODI though they are likely to face stiffer challenge from the West Indian side than was expected at the start of the series.
Our Prediction for India vs West Indies 3rd ODI
India shall win the 3rd ODI
Before the start of the ODI series few would have given any chance to the West Indian side to challenge the Indians in their own backyard in the ODI series. After all the drubbing they faced in the Test series pointed towards the decline of cricket in the Caribbean. The visitors showed some sparks in the 1st ODI only to lose out to the brilliance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In the 2nd ODI they gave scares to the Indian team in a thrilling encounter that finally ended in a rare tie. It was Indians who escaped a loss as the West Indian batting controlled most parts of the game during the chase and it was only in the final overs that Indians pulled back the game. With both sides equally matched on firepower the third ODI at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune promises to be an exciting one.
