Squad Comparison

India

After a long gap, Virat Kohli’s men would be playing a test match at home. Betting sites in India have already tagged them as favorites to win the first of the three-Test Matches. The skipper would be confident about his resources going into this game. The side had done well in West Indies winning the series 2-0 where batsmen looked in good form. Kohli would like his team to continue with the same form and at the same time not take the South Africans lightly as they have a good side that has experience of playing in Indian conditions.

Rohit Sharma is likely to open for the side along with Mayank Agarwal. It will be a big test for Rohit whose Test match temperament has always been questioned. In the middle order, the side is very strong with the ever dependent Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the side. Hanuma Vihari, Rishab Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja add depth to the Indian batting. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah’s injury comes as a big blow but Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma will look to trouble the South Africans with the new ball. Ashwin and Jadeja will look to exploit South Africa’s weakness with spin and Vihari will have to play the supporting role well.

South Africa

Faf du Plessis would know that his team hasn’t won a Test Match on Indian soil for almost a decade and in their last tour in 2015, they were schooled by the Indian spinners. Facing the #1 Test side in the world in its own den is a big challenge and this is something the skipper would be aware of. His team lacks experience playing Test cricket here and this is something that would worry the skipper. He would have to use his fast bowling resources intelligently and expect his batsmen to play the spinners well to win this game.

Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram will need to provide the side with a good start at the top. The team has to do well when the ball is hard and new. In the middle order, the side will miss the experience of Amla and here rely on Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock and skipper Faf du Plessis. Vernon Philander and Theunis de Bruyn will need to make this opportunity count, especially against the spinners. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi will have to cause damage to the Indian batting with the new ball on a surface that is not likely to offer much of assistance. Keshav Maharaj would have a lot riding on his shoulders and he alone with Dane Piedt and Philander need to bowl well in the game.

Our Prediction for India vs South Africa

India would win this game

The Indian team would play the first Test match at home in more than a year when they take on the South African side at Visakhapatnam. It will be a test for some of the younger players in the squad who will be playing on home soil for the first time. Indians would want to get off to a winning start in the Test series having drawn the T20 series against their own expectations. For the South African side, it would be a huge challenge as only a few players have the experience of playing in India and would have to fight it out against the Indian spinners.

Indians have lost just two Test matches at home in the last seven years and would start as favorites to win this one.
