England leads with 2 wins so far in the 5-match ODI series, and needs 1 more for a series win just before the World Cup 2019. The English tracks and weather has been very favourable, and batsmen have made the most out of them.

After defending 373 runs in the 2nd ODI, the English team chased down a 359-runs target, winning by 6 wickets in the last match. Openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are in great touch. In the chase, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali were promoted up the order, playing before Eoin Morgan. While in the 2nd ODI, where England batted first, Eoin Morgan came in to bat at number 4, when England were 177-2 in the 31st over. Morgan played two wicket-keepers, Bairstow and Buttler in the 2nd ODI, where Buttler hit 110 off 55 balls. While in the 3rd ODI, Buttler was replaced by Joe Denly.

England’s top order is in great form and the middle order is strong and capable to finish games. England are a stronger batting side than Pakistan, given their consistency and current form. Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett will be the key bowlers for England, and Morgan might use them as his go-to bowlers to break a partnership.

Though they’re 2 down in the series, Pakistan have performed really well thus far. They were short by 12 runs in the 2nd ODI chasing 373 runs, while they made a great comeback in the 3rd ODI to score 358 runs in the 1st innings. Pakistani openers were impressive in both matches, while there are issues in the middle.

Asif Ali was played down the order at number 6 in the last match, where he scored 52 off 43 balls, while in the 3rd match, he played at number 4 scoring 51 off 36 balls. It seems Pakistan is trying out all the possible combinations of their top batting order in this series. The middle order in the last match had Haris Sohail, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Asif Ali at number 4, 5 and 6, are likely to bat at different positions in the 4th ODI.

A change in their batting order may affect the chances of good, long partnerships in the middle for Pakistan. They need to get the right players playing at right positions and build partnerships. Number 3 and 4 positions need to be filled by experienced and batsmen with a balanced style of batting. A radical or brute batting style is better suited at number 6, 7, and 8. Shaheen Shah Afridi hasn’t been successful with the ball so far, while Faheem Ashraf and Imad Wasim, the all-rounders in the side picked a wicket each in the last match. Bowling on these English pitches, which have got good, even bounce, is a tough job.
