ENG vs NZ Highlights

England had everything at stake in this match. Winning this would confirm their semi-final berth, while New Zealand would still make it to the playoffs even if they lose. England had not qualified for semi-finals since 1992 and not beaten New Zealand in a World Cup match since 1983.

Winning the toss in this do-or-die match, England opted to bat first. As we had mentioned in our England vs New Zealand match prediction, toss was going to be a huge factor and team batting first would have the advantage.

England Innings

Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy walked on to the crease to open the innings for England and the Winner odds were set at 1.32 for England. While those for New Zealand were set at 3.25 in the match winner market.

England vs New Zealand Odds

Looking at the recent performance of the two openers against India, England were the favourites in the Highest Opening Partnership market at this point with odds of 1.30.

England got off to a good start in the first over scoring 9 runs without losing a wicket. The Over 27.5 option in the 1st 5 Overs Total Runs market had odds of 1.76 at this point in the England innings.

A Rs.100 bet on that selection would have returned Rs.176 as England had scored 44 runs without any loss of wickets at the end of 5 overs. Such a start from the two openers also affected the odds in the Winner market as England now had odds of 1.19.

Jason Roy had scored 14 off 20 balls, while Jonny Bairstow was batting at 136.36 strike rate scoring 30 off 22 balls when the pair completed 50 runs of their partnership in 7 overs. With 53 runs coming off 7 overs, the Over 95.5 option in the 1st 15 Over Total Runs market had odds of 1.74.

Jason Roy paced his scoring rate later on as he was batting on 47 off 49 balls and Bairstow was unbeaten on 48 off 41 balls at the end of 15 overs. England’s score at this point read 104 for no loss. The over 95.5 bet with a stake of Rs.100 in the 15 over total runs market would have returned Rs.174 at this point.

When England openers go all guns blazing early in the innings, there are a lot of opportunities for punters to win big in the live betting markets. England lost their 1st wicket in he 19th over as Jason Roy was out caught trying to play through covers. After losing their first wicket for 123, England had a 71-runs partnership between Bairstow and Joe Root, before losing Root in the 31st over out caught behind.

New Zealand's Comeback

New Zealand bowlers bounced back quickly as England lost 2 wickets in the next 4 overs for just 20 runs. From 194-1 in 30 overs, England were 4 wickets down for 241 runs after 40 overs. James Neesham bowled some really tight overs for New Zealand as England could manage only 47 runs for 3 wickets between Over 30 to 40.

The way England were cruising at one point having scored 194-1 in 30 overs, the Over 344.5 selection in the 1st Innings Team Runs market had odds of 1.31. While the odds for Under 344.5 were set at 2.70.

England vs New Zealand Total Runs

In the 42nd over, England lost Ben Stokes to Mitchell Santner. James Neesham continued his tight spell conceding only 1 runs in the 43 over, bowling 5 dots to Chris Woakes. England reached 250 runs-mark in the 44th over and the odds for England in the Winner market had now increased to 1.29.

England vs New Zealand Winner

Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett added 16 and 15 runs respectively off 12 balls each towards the end, helping their side cross 300 runs. As England finished 305-8 in 50 overs, the odds for both teams in the Winner market looked like this –

England vs New Zealand Winner Odds

The pitch had clearly changed and become slower as the innings progressed making it difficult for batsmen to play freely and score boundaries. New Zealand had put breaks to the England innings which at one point looked cruising to 320 plus and possibly 350. A Rs.100 bet on Under 344.5 option in the 1st Innings Team Runs market after 30 overs, would have returned Rs.270.

New Zealand Innings

Chasing a target of 300 plus on this track which had now become a bit slower was always going to be a challenge for an already struggling New Zealand batting line-up.

Henry Nicholls was given out LBW on the 5th ball of the 1st over, and New Zealand were 1 down for 2 runs. The odds had again changed completely in England’s favour –

The kiwis did not take the review, and after a while on looking at the replay, ball tracking showed the ball missing the wickets as it had struck Nicholls high on his pads.

Soon after, Martin Guptill walked back to the pavilion as Jos Buttler took an exceptional catch diving to his left and NZ were 14-2 in the 6th over. New Zealand has had their openers fail consistently in this World Cup 2019 putting the middle order under a lot of pressure. While Williamson and Ross Taylor performed well under pressure in some matches early in this tournament, doing it every single time is a big ask.

Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were both run out in the 16th and 17th over respectively. At this point with 69 runs on the board and 4 wickets down, chasing 306 seemed an improbable task for the kiwis. In the 19th over, at the score of 79-4 the odds for England in the Winner market hit the lowest at 1.01.

England vs New Zealand Match Odds

Tom Latham scored the only half century in the New Zealand innings and was out in the 39th over for 57 off 65 balls. New Zealand finished 186 all out in 45 overs, as England won the match by 119 runs.

This was England’s first win over New Zealand in World Cups since 1983. England have made it to the World Cup semi-final for the first time since 1992. England’s batsmen and bowlers have come around after a few hiccups in the middle just at the right time. While New Zealand who would still very likely make it to the semi-final have lost 3 consecutive matches. These are signs of worry for the kiwis going into the play offs and whichever team (either Australia or India) they meet, they are likely to start as underdogs.
