Ashes 5th Test Squad Comparison

Cricket can be a great leveler and nobody would know it better than English skipper Joe Root. After the salute and adulation, they got after the Headingley Test the side tasted one of its biggest defeats in the 4th Test Match and have already conceded the Urn to the Aussies. It was a total failure with the bat and the ball that let to their downfall. The return of Steven Smith to the Aussie camp just seems to have played into the minds of the English side. With some of their players looking in a horrible form with the bat, Root would have a lot to worry as he would want his team to win the next game and level the series 2-2.

Openers Rory Burns and Joe Denly have played relatively well in the series but they have failed to convert their starts into big score something they need to do in the next game. It has been a silent Ashes for Root by his standards so far and he will look for a big score in the next game. The problem for the side is with the batting form of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow as apart from few cameos they have not added to their reputation. Ben Stones continues to shine and will be looking to make contributions in the last game. Stuart Broad has used his experience well this series but lack of support from the other end has been a problem. Jofra Archer hasn’t been the sensation that the side would have wanted him to be. Craig Overton, Jack Leach, and Stokes have been ineffective and they will need to fix this ahead of the next game.

Tim Paine was at the top of the world with the win in the last game. But the skipper also has his share of problems. Without their talisman Steven Smith, the Australian batting has looked hopeless in most of the games as David Warner’s miserable run with the bat has compounded problems for the skipper. While the bowlers have had a good series so far the batting line-up barring Smith and Marnus Labuschagne doesn’t inspire much confidence. Though the side would retain the Ashes irrespective of the results in the next game the Aussie skipper would eye on being the first Aussie skipper since Steve Waugh in 2001 to win a series on English soil.

David Warner just doesn’t seem to be there at the moment and managed 79 runs in eight innings so far. His opening partner Marcus Harris too has been struggling for form. Steven Smith has 671 runs from five innings in this series which speaks a lot about the kind of form he is in at the moment. His understudy Marnus Labuschagne is also having a great tour. Travis Head, Matthew Wade, and Paine are doing well down the order but they will have to convert their starts to big scores and not rely on Smith to do the heavy lifting. The Australian pace attack had a great game in the last Test where Pat Cummins troubled the English batsmen every time he bowled. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood also supported well during the game. Nathan Lyon has looked out of form in most of the games and he would be looking end this tour on a high.

Our Prediction for England vs Australia

Australia would win this game

The Ashes 2019 has seen its ups and downs. If Australians surprised everyone at Birmingham after a poor start the English side scripted a historic win at Headingley. The last game at Old Trafford truly belonged to the Aussies as the hosts lost the game on Day 2 itself and were playing a catch-up game. As the two teams now move to Kennington Oval, London the hosts would be looking to win this one and level the series. A defeat after the World Cup triumph will end the summer on a sad note for the hosts. Australians having sensed England’s weakness in the last game would surely go for the kill in the next one.

Australians would go into the next game full of confidence and having Steven Smith in form makes them favorites to win this game and take the series 3-1.
