Dindigul Dragons lost to Chepauk Super Gillies in the Qualifier 1 of TNPL 2019. They have now lost 2 consecutive T20 matches this season and will be facing defending champions Madurai Panthers in the Qualifier 2 match. Hari Nishanth and N Jagadeesan will be the key batsmen for Dindigul Dragons as these two have been the major contributors in most of the team’s wins. Dindigul needs one of these batsmen to stay longer and play a big innings as the middle order hasn’t been able to finish on a high note. While R Vivek, Sumant Jain and NS Chaturved are all good batting options and can potentially get important runs for the side, they haven’t really got the side out of a crisis situation before. It is the top 3 batsmen including R Ashwin that need to have one big partnership that would allow middle order batsmen Sumant Jain and NS Chaturved to play more freely towards the end.
B Praanesh found a place in the playing XI for last 2 matches and picked 5 wickets in total. His inclusion has been impactful while other bowlers haven’t really delivered as expected. While R Ashwin has been quite successful in picking wickets, his economy rate is a concern and cannot be seen as a match winner for Dindigul. It will be up to R Rohit, Hari Nishanth and M Silambarasan to give their side early breakthroughs and not allow the opposition to settle down after early setbacks. Arun Karthik’s wicket should be the top priority for Dindigul. If they get rid of him early in the innings, Dindigul will have a great advantage, though they will need more wickets given the recent batting form of Madurai Panthers.
With 5 back to back wins, Madurai Panthers have found themselves a spot in the Qualifier 2 match. After their dismal batting performance chasing 94 runs against Karaikudi earlier, Madurai bounced back really well in the Eliminator match against Kanchi Veerans. Arun Karthik’s 64 runs off 39 balls set the platform for chasing 152, and Abhishek Tanwar and Jagatheesan Kousik gave the final touches with 26 off 19 and 15 off 7 balls respectively. It was a great batting performance from the Panthers as the early contribution from Arun Karthik had got the momentum going for the middle order batsmen who have previously played good innings in the death overs.
It was an ideal situation for Abhishek Tanwar and Jagatheesan Kousik to bat in. Had things gone differently with Arun Karthik being dismissed for under 20 runs, Kousik and Tanwar would’ve probably folded in under pressure. Skipper Shijit Chandran also plays a crucial role of anchoring the innings at number 3 and the Madurai batting seems much stronger and confident with the Eliminator match win. Bowling has been most impressive with Rahil Shah and Abhishek Tanwar picking up wickets, though expensive towards the end. N Selva Kumaran had the perfect economy rate along with a wicket and Madurai’s bowling attack seems to be strong in the early and the middle overs. If they could make the most of the first 6 overs picking up wickets of Hari Nishant and N Jagadeesan, they will have done half the job.
Dindigul Dragons are favourites to win this match.
Dindigul’s batting is their strength and inspite of a few recent losses, the side’s strong enough to bounce back in the knock out game. They would need to improve on their bowling if they’re to stop the in-form Madurai Panthers batting order. Madurai on the other hand have improved on different aspects of their game. While their bowing has been top notch recently, Arun Karthik’s fearless batting at the top has definitely pumped confidence in the middle order.
After looking at the last 2 matches of TNPL, one thing that’s sure about the league and the matches is uncertainty. A few characteristics of a win in TNPL are strong bowling performances, spinners picking up wickets in middle overs, and one big innings from a top order batsmen. Betting sites had Dindigul as favourites for the 1st Qualifier match, and continue to do so for the 2nd as well. It is however very likely that we would witness an equally poised game.
