Chelsea 2 – 1 Newcastle
Maurizio Sarri welcomes Newcastle to Stamford Bridge hoping to kick start what has become a frustrating season for Chelsea.
Although Maurizio Sarri had repeatedly said that his Chelsea side are nowhere near being able to win the Premier League the way they started the season had many thinking that they may well have a shot at least a Champions League spot. His side are still in the top four but have looked unimpressive of late and need a win at home to Newcastle to put some pressure on Spurs in third.
Newcastle didn’t win a single game until the start of November and have looked poor all season. A late penalty against Blackburn in the FA Cup means another match to fit into a busy schedule for Benitez. Newcastle face Manchester City and Spurs in the next couple of weeks and may well be looking further ahead for a realistic chance to add to their points tally.
One of the main reasons for Chelsea’s slide is that they do not have a recognised striker in form. Alvaro Morata scored two against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup but the easy chance he missed shows his lack of confidence and Sarri has tended to rely on Eden Hazard and the rest of his attacking midfielders to find the net for him.
Although they are 15th in the table Newcastle are only two points off the relegation spots and online betting sites offer relatively short odds on them being one of the three clubs to go down. Even with their goal scoring problems Chelsea should have too much for them at home and could easily run out 2-0 winners here.
- Chelsea to win to nil
Only bottom of the table Huddersfield have scored fewer Premier League goals than Newcastle this season and Chelsea should easily see off the Magpies in this one.
- Chelsea to win 2-0
Newcastle have struggled this season but so have the Chelsea strikers. This should be an easy three points for the home side but they may not score many goals in the process.

Head To Head
Chelsea have not lost to Newcastle at Stamford Bridge since 2012 and have enjoyed the balance of play in this fixture for a while now. They also won 2-1 at St James’ Park earlier in the season.
- His critics may point to his lack of involvement in anything meaningful when it comes to goals but Jorginho still leads the way in passes in the Premier League this season.
- It is difficult to win many games if you don’t have much of the ball and although Benitez would argue that his contain and counter approach is the best way to get any points this season only three teams have touched the ball on fewer occasions than Newcastle.
- Chelsea may have scored fewer goals than any of the teams around them but they are still making chances for themselves – only Manchester City have recorded more shots.
- Newcastle have relied on a relatively successful defensive unit this season. Both Arsenal and Manchester United have allowed more goals than the Magpies.
