Shakib Al Hasan returns to the team as skipper and would have expected the team to be in better shape that he finds it in. While the side won the last Test Match against Zimbabwe and drew the series 1-1 the result would have surely disappointed the team management as well as the fans. The poor display of batting in the 1st Test against Zimbabwe shows the weakness that the side especially faces at the top. Hasan would know that the West Indian bowlers would put up a stiffer challenge in the BAN vs WI Test series and he would want his team start the 2-Match Test series on a winning note and not repeat the horrors of the last series.
The absence of experienced Tamin Iqbal who is nursing an injury was evident as both Liton Das and Imrul Kayes failed to give the team good start opening the batting. Mominul Haque is in brilliant form and so is the ever dependable Mushfiqur Rahim who scored that stunning double hundred in the last game. With Mahmudullah and Shakib in the lower middle order the side should feel confident about their batting. The bowling attack looks strong with Mustafizur Rahman and Khaled Ahmed having the new ball. But it will be the spin trio of the in-form Taijul Islam and the seasoned Shakib and Mehidy Hasan that is expected to trouble the West Indians.
The West Indians faced a huge blow before the start of the series with skipper Jason Holder missing the tour on injury. Stand-in skipper Kraigg Brathwaite has a big task on his hand especially after the disastrous tour of India in Test series where the side surrendered in the two-match Test series. But the side played well in the ODIs and their long tour of the sub-continent would have allowed the players to get good idea of the conditions. Brathwaite would hope his batsmen fire in the upcoming game and they don’t fall like a pack of cards as they did during the tour of India.
Brathwaite has to put a price on his wicket at top of the order. His opening partner Kieran Powell did well in the practice game against Bangladesh Cricket Board XI. Shai Hope at No. 3 also did well in that game and he would have to play the anchor’s role in the game. Sunil Ambris, Roston Chase and the young sensation Shimron Hetmyer need to get in the habit of capitalizing on their starts. It would be a test of character for them in this series. On the bowling front Kemar Roach’s return to the Test side strengthens their bowling. He along with Shannon Gabriel and Keemo Paul will have to get early breakthroughs. Lot would depend on Devendra Bishoo and Jomel Warrican to make use of these conditions and set up a win for the side.
Our Prediction for Bangladesh vs West Indies 1st Test Match
Bangladesh would win the 1st Test Match
West Indies had a horrible tour of India especially in the Test Matches. Bangladesh on the other hand isn’t in the best of form if their performance against the Zimbabweans in the recently concluded Test series anything to go by. Given this context the 1st Test Match between the two sides at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong becomes a contest between two equally matched sides on paper. With only two matches to be played in the series both the sides would be eager to win the first Test Match and take an unassailable lead in the series. It would be a test of temperament for the batsmen on both sides who have shown the habit of collapsing under pressure.
There isn’t much to choose between the two sides on their current form. But Bangladesh by virtue of being familiar with the conditions and a better spin bowling attack seem to be nose ahead in the game at the moment.
