Before the Asia Cup Qualifier 2018, UAE and Hong Kong had played 4 matches head to head and Hong Kong had on 2 of those 4 matches. The scales were even and it wasn’t very clear as to who will win the final.

The final started with Hong Kong winning the toss and electing to bowl first. UAE had a good opening partnership of 54 runs before Chirag Suri was bowled out by Tanwir Afzal in the 13th over.

Rohan Mustafa, the captain of UAE who has been in a good form in the series was dismissed for 0 after facing 8 balls by Aizaz Khan. Aizaz Khan quickly dismissed another UAE batsman Rameez Shahzad for just 2 runs and UAE were 65-3.

The match was affected by rain and was reduced to 24 overs each side. UAE had a slow start and it affected the total they could reach to. The other important partnership in the UAE innings was between the opener Ashfaq Ahmed (79) and Shaiman Anwar (22) of 58 runs for the 4th wicket.

It was the second time in UAE innings that a wicket fell soon after a partnership was broken and they lost Ashfaq Ahmed’s wicket in the same over.

UAE finished 176-9 in their 24 overs. Aizaz Khan picked 5 wickets for 28 runs in 5 overs and was crucial in the collapse of the UAE batting. He picked some crucial wickets like Rohan Mustafa, Rameez Shahzad.

Nadeem Ahmed picked 3 for 28 in 3 overs.

The match resumed with Hong Kong openers coming out to chase a target of 179 runs. Hong Kong got a good start that was required for the chase and the openers put 64 runs in just 6 overs.

UAE captain Rohan Mustafa gave them the breakthrough by dismissing Hong Kong opener Nizakat Khan (38) bowled out and more wickets fell in quick succession after that. Hong Kong captain Anshuman Rath was bowled out by Ahmed Raza in the 10th over and Hong Kong were 82-4.

These quick wickets in the first 10 overs brought UAE back in the game and anything was possible from here.

Christopher Carter and Ehsan Khan put up 53 runs for 5th wicket and gave the Hong Kong innings a stability and the thriller of a match was on.

After this partnership was broken, Hong Kong lost 3 more wickets in just 12 runs and were 147-7 in the 20th over.

UAE were on top of the game at this point. But the 22nd over changed things around and 2 sixes came off that over. Scott McKechnie and Tanwir Afzal hit one six each and 16 runs came off the 22nd over.

Hong Kong lost another wicket in the next over but scored 8 runs and were just inches away from victory at 176-8 after 23 overs.

With just 3 runs needed from the last over, Hong Kong got 3 runs on 3 balls and won the match by 2 wickets and 3 balls remaining.

Aizaz Khan was awarded the Man of the Match.

Hong Kong has qualified for the Asia Cup 2018. They will face big teams like India and Pakistan in the group stage. It will be interesting to see how Hong Kong plays these teams.
