Asia Cup 2018 – Highlights & Summary
Asia Cup 2018 was held in UAE and started on 15th September 2018. 6 teams participated in this tournament. Hong Kong won the Asia Cup 2018 qualifier to secure the 6th spot in Asia Cup 2018 tournament.
The 6 teams were divided into 2 groups for the Group stage matches. 13 matches were played in total including the Asia Cup 2018 final.
The 2 venues set for the matches were the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi and the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
Group A had the awaited match between India and Pakistan on 19th September 2018 at Dubai.
India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2018
Pakistan won the toss and elected to field. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 3 for 15 was the highlight performance in the innings as Pakistan was all out for 162 runs.
India chased down the total comfortably and reached 164 in the 30th over. Rohit Sharma scored 52 runs giving India the right start.
The group stage match between India and Hong Kong was a thrilling one as Hong Kong fought hard to win against a side like India.
India vs Hong Kong Asia Cup 2018
Hong Kong won the toss and elected to field first. Indian openers gave a great start and Shikhar Dhawan scored 127 off 120 balls. Hong Kong made a comeback in the 3rd Powerplay as they restricted India to 285-7 in 50 overs. Kinchit Shah picked 3 for 39 and was crucial in the death overs.
Hong Kong openers Nizakat Khan and Anshuman Rath put a solid partnership of 174 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal picked 3 for 46 for India. Hong Kong’s inexperienced side fell short of the total by 26 runs and finished 259/8.
Hong Kong lost both of their group stage matches against India and Pakistan. India and Pakistan qualified for Super Fours from group A.
Group B had the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the rising team of Afghanistan. This group saw some major upsets.
Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2018
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Afghanistan batsmen played well to get 2 50-runs partnerships and Rahmat Shah scored 72 off 90 balls. Afghanistan finished 249-10 in 50 overs. Thisara Perera picked 5-55 for Sri Lanka.
Most of his wickets came in the last 10 overs.
Afghanistan put a great performance in the field with their bowling and fielding. Rashid Khan picked 2 for 26 along with other bowlers who picked regular wickets. Sri Lanka was all out for 158 and Afghanistan won by 91 runs.
Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh in their 1st group stage match.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Asia Cup 2018
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. They put a total of 255-7 in 50 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 58 for Afghanistan. Shakib Al Hasan picked 4-42 in his 10 overs.
Bangladesh in return could only score 119 and were all out. Rashid Khan picked 2 for 13.
Bangladesh and Afghanistan qualified for the Super Four from group B.
India were on top of all teams they played against in the Super Four except for Afghanistan.
India defeated Bangladesh in the 1st Super Four match. Bangladesh were all out for 173 and India chased down the total in 37th over with 7 wickets in hand. Rohit Sharma continued his good form and scored unbeaten 83.
Afghanistan gave some thrilling matches to witness in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2018.
Afghanistan vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2018
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Hasmatullah Shahidi scored unbeaten 97 off 118 balls. Afghanistan finished 257-6 in 50 overs. Mohammad Nawaz wicked 3 wickets for Pakistan.
Pakistan lost 7 wickets in the chase as Afghanistan bowlers and fielders kept in tight and took the match to the last over. Rashid Khan picked 3 for 46. Shoaib Malik was the star for Pakistan as he finished the match in the last over.

Pakistan vs India Asia Cup 2018
Pakistan and India met once again in Asia Cup 2018 in the super four ODI. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Shoaib Malik continued his form and scored 78 off 90 balls. Jasprit Bumrah picked 2 for 29 along with other bowlers who picked regular wickets.
Pakistan finished 237/7 in 50 overs.
India in turn chased down the total quite comfortably. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan both scored hundreds and put together a partnership of 210 runs for the 1st wicket. India won the match by 9 wickets.
India had won 2 of 2 matches and was in the finals with one super four match to play. Pakistan had won 1 of their 2 matches and Bangladesh had played 1 and lost 1.
In their next match Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan in a close thriller. Afghanistan batsmen had done well to chase a target of 250 runs. Shahidi scored 71 off 99 balls and Afghanistan needed 8 runs off 6 balls in the last over. Mustafizur Rahman bowled cleverly to defend such a low ask and dismissed Rashid Khan in the last over.
Bangladesh won by 3 runs and the next match between Pakistan and Bangladesh was the decider match for the 2nd finalist of Asia Cup 2018.
Bangladesh vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2018
Bangladesh scored 239 runs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Mushfiqur Rahim sacred 99 for Bangladesh. Junaid Khan picked 4-19 for Pakistan.
Pakistan lost early wickets in the 1st Powerplay and never actually made a comeback from there on. Pakistan finished 202-9 in 50 overs and lost by 37 runs.
Bangladesh was the second finalist to face India in Asia Cup 2018 final.
The Tie – India vs Afghanistan Asia Cup 2018
One super four match in particular that caught everyone’s eyes was the Afghanistan vs India super four ODI. India’s openers and lead bowlers were rested for the match and MS Dhoni was the captain. Afghanistan winning the toss and electing to bat first scored 252-8 in 50 overs. Mohammad Shahzad scored 124, his first hundred against India.
India’s opener both scored half centuries and gave India a good start to chase the total. Afghanistan bowlers made a great comeback and picked wickets regularly. India needed 1 off 2 balls in the last over to win the match with 1 wicket in hand and Ravindra Jadeja was out caught at dee mid-wicket on a delivery from Rashid Khan. The match ended in a tie.
The India vs Bangladesh final too was a thrilling one as Bangladesh bowlers made a comeback picking wickets early. India needed 6 off the last over and Kudleep Yadav along with Kedar Jadhav ensured India’s victory scoring 1 run off every ball in the last over.
