Squad Comparison

Afghanistan

Rashid Khan has a big challenge on his hand as he leads his side for the first time in ODI cricket. This will be their first game after the dismal performance at the World Cup where the side lost all the nine games and made news for several off-field reasons.  The team has undergone major churning and the new skipper would want to put the setback of the World Cup behind and start the series with a win. They are playing in spin-friendly conditions and with their good bowling attack will look to trouble the West Indian side.

Rahmat Shah has to play well at the top and together with Hazratullah Zazai will look to put up a good partnership. This will be important for the side against the quality pace attack that the West Indies has. In the middle order, the likes of Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Ali Khan, and Najibullah Zardan have proved themselves on the world stage and look to play well as a unit and put up a big score on the board. The side has a good bowling attack with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Yamin Ahmadzai opening the bowling and shall look to hunt as a pair. Skipper Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi will need to bowl those teasing spells in the middle overs to script a victory for the side.

West Indies

Kieron Pollard assumes leadership of the side after the dismal performance they had against the Indian team at home two months back. Over the last few years, West Indies cricket has been through phases where they have looked good followed by seasons where they have bitten the dust. The hard-hitting all-rounder will look to put that to rest and aim for consistency. On paper, they are much better sides than Afghanistan and the skipper would want his players to believe in their abilities and start this long series with a win.

The side would be looking for a good start from Evin Lewis and Brandon King at the top of the order. The new pair will have to negotiate the tricky spells from the Afghan spinners with the new ball. Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran solidify the middle order for the side with the latter two known for their explosive batting. Pollard, Jason Holder and Keemo Paul with their hitting abilities will look to trouble the Afghan attack. The side would be hoping to see Sheldon Cottrell and Alzari Joseph bowl good spell with the new ball. Holder along with Paul and Hayden Walsh has to keep things tight in the middle overs.

Our Prediction for Afghanistan vs West Indies

West Indies would win this game

It is the first ODI in the all-important home series for Afghanistan where they would play against West Indies. Both sides had a dismal show at the World Cup and the West Indian side looked in poor form against Indians in their last series at home. They would now be eager to restore some pride and confidence in this series. Afghanistan has a quality bowling attack while the West Indian side is known for its explosive batting and this should make it a good contest between the bat and the ball.

The contest is expected to be a close one but the West Indian team has more depth in batting and this gives them a slight edge over Afghanistan going into this game.
