Afghanistan vs India Super Four – Highlights & Summary
Afghanistan had lost 2 of their 2 super four matches and were out of the race to the Asia Cup 2018 final. While India winning 2 of their 2 super four matches were comfortably placed in the finals.
Afghanistan had come very close to victory in their previous 2 matches against Bangladesh and Pakistan with their consistent performance. On the other hand, India had won their previous two matches with a lot ease defeating Bangladesh and Pakistan by huge margins and were clearly the favourites in this match.
But Afghanistan was not one to give up. Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first.
Afghanistan innings started in an unusual way. Mohammad Shahzad and Javed Ahmadi opening the innings for Afghanistan gave an opening partnership of 65 runs. Though the contribution of Javed Ahmadi in this partnership was just 5 runs.
Ahmadi was the first man to be dismissed in the 13th over as he was stumped out on a delivery by Jadeja.
2 overs later, Rahmat Shah batting at number 3 lost his wicket bowled by Jadeja. Hashmatullah Shahidi who had scored two consecutive half centuries in the previous two matches was out stumped for 0 soon after.
Asghar Afghan was bowled for a duck on the very first ball he faced of Kuldeep Yadav.
Shahidi and Asghar Afghan were dismissed on back to back deliveries from Kuldeep Yadav and Afghanistan were 82-4 with Mohammad Shahzad scoring most of the runs from one end. He reached his 50 in 37 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Gulbadin Naib who came in after Asghar Afghan was out, scored 15 runs off 46 balls with 1 four and along with Mohammad Shahzad put together a 50-runs partnership. Naib’s wicket fell at the score of 132 when Deepak Chahar dismissed him caught out claiming his 1st ODI wicket.
From there on, Shahzad and Nabi built a 48-runs partnership for the 6th wicket. And Mohammad Shahzad reached his 5th ODI hundred, and the 1st against India.
Kedar Jadhav got Mohammad Shahzad out caught by Karthik and Afghanistan were 180-6 in the 38th over. Shahzad scored 124 runs off 116 balls with 11 fours and 7 sixes.
Mohammad Nabi scored 64 off 56 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes and that took the Afghanistan score to a competitive total as Afghanistan finished 252-8 in 50 overs.
Jadeja picked 3 wickets for India with Kuldeep Yadav picking 2 wickets. Khaleel Ahmed, Chahar, and Kedar Jadhav picked 1 wicket each.
India had rested Dhawan and Rohit Sharma for this match and so, KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu opened the innings for India. The two openers gave a solid 110-runs opening stand to make the chase easier for the next batsmen down the order.
Ambati Rayudu was out for 57 in the 18th over dismissed by Mohammad Nabi. KL Rahul was the next Indian wicket to fall when Rashid Khan got Rahul lbw out in the 21st over.
India were 127-2 when both the openers had returned to the pavilion. MS Dhoni was the captain for this match and he was out quickly for just 8 runs. India lost another wicket quickly thereafter when Aftab Alam dismissed Manish Pandey caught behind for 8.
India were 166-4 in the 31st over.
While India lost wickets at regular intervals, Dinesh Karthik was batting from other end trying to take India closer to victory without losing his wicket.
Kedar Jadhav and Karthik batted together for 8 overs and together put 38 runs for the 5th wicket and then both lost their wickets in quick succession in back to back overs.
Jadhav was run out for 19 in the 39th over and Karthik was out lbw by Nabi in the 40th over and India were 205-6.
Afghanistan had bounced right back into the game with their bowling and India were still 48 runs away from victory with 4 wickets in hand and 10 overs to go.
A Thrilling Finish
Jadeja played well along with Chahar and both added crucial runs in the chase before Afghanistan picked another wicket in the 45th over dismissing Chahar for 12. He was out bowled by Aftab Alam.
Though India were losing wickets they were always ahead of the required run rate and needed just 17 runs from 18 balls after 47 overs.
Rashid Khan bowled the 48th over and gave away just 4 runs keeping Afghanistan still in the game.
With just 13 required from 12 balls, India lost another wicket in a run out on the 1st ball of the 49th over and this time it was Kuldeep Yadav.
In the same over bowled by Aftab Alam, S Kaul was run out on the 5th ball and India were 9 wickets down.
After 49 overs India 246-9 and needed 7 from 6 balls.
Rashid Khan was bowling the last over and started with a dot ball to Jadeja. Jadeja hit a slog-sweep for four runs on the next ball changing the equation to 3 needed from 4 balls.
Jadeja flicked the next delivery bowled full on leg stump for a single and India needed 2 to win.
Rashid bowled a googly pitching full outside off to Khaleel Ahmed on the next ball and it resulted in another single.
The scores were tied and India needed 1 to win from 2 balls. Rashid bowled the next ball and made history as he got Jadeja out caught at mid-wicket and the match tied.
Afghanistan is the only team in the Asia Cup 2018 that was did not lose to India.
In a thrilling encounter, Afghanistan did not let India chase down 253 in 50 overs.
Aftab Alam, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan picked 2 wickets each. Javed Ahmadi picked 1 wicket in his 4 overs.
The match was tied and Mohammad Shahzad was awarded Man of the Match.
