Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Super Four – Highlights & Summary
Afghanistan and Bangladesh met in the last match of the group stage in Asia Cup 2018 where Afghanistan registered a clinical win over Bangladesh and had outplayed the Bangladesh side. It was the match where Rashid Khan gave an all-round performance, scoring a half century with the bat, picking 2 wickets with the ball and running out a Bangladesh batsman on his own bowling.
Afghanistan looked confident coming into this match with their batsman in form and Rashid Khan, and Nabi performing well with both bat and ball. Both Bangladesh and Afghanistan had lost their 1st match in the Super Four and needed to win this one to stay alive in the competition.
Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first.
Afghanistan bowlers have managed to pick early wickets through this Asia Cup and they continued their form dismissing Bangladesh opener Nazmul Shanto in the 5th over for 6 runs.
Aftab Alam picked the 1st wicket giving Afghanistan a breakthrough and soon after in the 6th over, Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Mohammad Mithun lbw and Bangladesh were 18-2.
Following the quick fall of wickets Liton Das along with Mushfiqur Rahim build a 50 plus partnership putting together 63 runs for the 3rd wicket. The partnership ended when Rashid Khan got Liton Das out lbw in the 19th over.
A miscommunication between the new batsman Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim in the just 2 balls later saw Bangladesh lose another wicket.
Shakib Al Hasan was run out and was back in the pavilion for 0 and Bangladesh and lost 2 wicket in one over after a 63-runs partnership.
That wasn’t the only run-out in Bangladesh innings and another one followed in the 21st over when Mushfiqur Rahim was run out and Bangladesh were in trouble at 87-5.
The Bangladesh innings was resurrected by two half centuries from Imrul Kayes (72) and Mahmudullah (74) who also put together 128 runs for the 6th wicket.
Mahmudullah was dismissed in the the 47th over by Aftab Alam.
Bangladesh finished 249-7 in 50 overs. Aftab Alam picked 3 wickets, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman picked 1 wicket each.
Afghanistan had score 250 plus in their previous innings and this target was something they could chase easily.
Afghanistan innings suffered a blow right at the beginning with Mustafizur Rahman dismissing the opener Ihsanullah in the 4th over. Afghanistan lost another wicket soon after when Rahmat Shah was run out by Sahkib al Hasan in the 8th over and they were 26-2.
Mohammad Shahzad on the other end played a fine innings and with 8 fours he scored his half century.
Afghanistan lost their 3rd wicket when Mahmudullah bowled Shahzad in the 25th over and Afghanistan were 83-3 chasing 250.
Hashmatullah Shahidi continued his good form and scored consecutive half century. His 78 runs partnership with the captain Asghar Afghan ended when Mashrafe Mortaza dismissed Asghar Afghan in the 40th over and Afghanistan were 167-4.
Shahidi was out bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza soon after as Shahidi looked to play a scoop shot to use the field set up for his advantage and score some boundaries.
A Thrilling finish
After Shahidi’s dismissal Mohammad Nabi along with Samiullah Shenwari kept the fight on and took the Afghanistan chase very close to the target. Mohammad Nabi lost his wicket caught at long-off when Afghanistan needed just 12 runs off 10 balls and Afghanistan were 238-6.
Rashid Khan was the next man in and now things looked good for Afghanistan as the in-form Rashid Khan was on the crease and they were close to winning.
The 49th over ended and Afghanistan needed 8 runs off 6 balls.
Mustafizur Rahman was bowing the last over. Rashid Khan got two runs off the 1st ball of the final over and the equation had now become 6 runs needed from 4 balls.
As Afghanistan was inching closer to yet another victory over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2018, Mustafizur Rahman bowled a brilliant and smart delivery to dismiss Rashid Khan caught and bowled.
Bangladesh was back in the game and Afghanistan needed 6 off 3 balls with Shenwari on strike.
Shenwari tried to pull the next delivery over the the short fine leg, but couldn’t connect his bat and the ball hitting his thigh landed right in the hands of the fielder at short fine leg.
Bangladesh players appealed and it was not out. Naib had the strike and needed 5 off the last 2 balls and he too got a leg bye.
Afghanistan needed four runs off the last ball. Mustafizur Rahman bowled short and wide outside the off stump and Shenwari trying to pull, lost the bat from his hand without hitting the ball and Afghanistan lost the match by 3 runs.
An amazing over by Mustafizur Rahman got Bangladesh the victory that almost belonged to Afghanistan at the start of the final over.
Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman picked 2 wickets each and Shakib and Mahmudullah picked 1 wicket each.
Mahmudullah was awarded Man of the Match for an all-round performance.
This was another close thriller where Afghanistan lost the match in the final over. Tough luck for Afghanistan, but they surely put a great spectacle for the Afghanistan fans who had come out to watch at Abu Dhabi and the cricket fans all over the world.
