World Cup Prediction - Final

Argentina vs France

And so, World Cup Qatar 2022 reaches its climax on Sunday 18th December with a massive showdown between two former winners, Argentina and France. It’s a fair reflection of the two teams’ performances throughout the competition, although Argentina did lose their opening game to Saudi Arabia lest we forget. But in Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, these two teams have the tournament’s standout performers, with the little Argentine in particular responsive for inspiring his team to the final. This is Messi’s World Cup swansong, and no one would begrudge this wizard a world title to add to his glittering haul of trophies. But France have incredible depth, and are the holders to boot. It will take something special to beat this French side, perhaps more than even the greatest player of all time can deliver without help from his teammates. It will be close, but the collective French class should tell to confirm back-to-back victories.

World Cup Predictions

Welcome to bettingtop10’s World Cup predictions section. Here you will find our in-depth predictions for every game at the Qatar World Cup. We run through all the group stage fixtures and follow the event all the way to the showpiece final on Sunday 18th December.

Our World Cup predictions and World Cup tips are the culmination of in-depth analysis of the matches, considering all relevant criteria. We look at the form of the two teams leading into the match, historical head-to-head records, player fitness and availability, and of course what is at stake in the game. But that’s not all, because we also deeply understand the relevance of the bookmakers odds in deciding what is a value-based bet to take on. Are the odds reflective of the risk you are taking on when placing your stake? It’s the classic risk/reward dilemma, and is at the heart of our World Cup tips.

Tournament Format

The 32 teams who will play at the Qatar World Cup have been drawn into eight highly-competitive groups. Each team will play the others in the group once, with the top two in each group qualifying for the knockout phase. With this format in mind, the final game in each group (matchday 3) is always heavily influenced by what has happened before. So, for example, if you strongly fancy England to beat Wales on matchday 3 in Group B, you may want to bear in mind that, after the first two group games, England may already be qualified. With this is mind, the English may choose to rest key players for the knockout phase. Of course this may not be the case at all, but the fact is we will only really know once the first two matches have taken place. As the tournament evolves, so must your World Cup betting.

World Cup Betting Tips

Our World Cup betting tips at bettingtop10 cover all of the most popular soccer / football betting markets. We’ll cover the markets in a moment. But in making our tips we factor in all the relevant statistics, form, and of course betting odds, always keeping value in mind. Thinking about the markets is key to our approach.

⚽ World Cup Betting Markets

When diving into your World Cup betting, you must understand the betting markets that are available to you in soccer. We couldn’t possibly discuss them all, because there are so many, but here are some of the best-loved and profitable:

  • Match odds or 1X2
The classic. Who will win the game, or will it be a draw? In knockout stage matches you can expand on this by predicting a team to win after extra time or even on penalties. The odds are usually short enough, but there’s money to be made with bigger stakes or predicting wins as part of accumulators (multi-bets when you could bet on who will win several matches, for example).
  • Total goals over/under
Fancy the match to contain lots of goals? Maybe you think the defences will come out on top. Bet over 2.5 goals, for example, meaning if the two teams combine to score three goals in the match, you win.
  • Both teams to score (BTTS)
Think both teams will score, or not? Pretty simple
  • First/Last/Anytime goalscorer
Fancy a particular player to get the first goal, or maybe the last? Or just fancy them to score anytime in the game? Variations here could be to bet on a player to score more than once, for example.
  • Half-time / full-time
Bet on who will be winning at half time (if anyone) and then at full-time. This is a popular variation on the match odds market.
  • Corners / yellow cards etc.
Bet on over or under a certain number of corners, cards or many other occurrences, usually provided as 0.5 options (for example, over 2.5). You can even bet on the exact number of many of these events too.

There are many more besides. But these here are the most popular markets for betting on soccer. And you can always combine them together too. Or bet live on these plus additional outcomes.

World Cup Betting Odds

Betting is all about the odds. But what does that actually mean, and how are the odds presented?

The betting odds reflect what the bookmaker believes are the chances of that outcome occurring. Odds can be displayed decimally, for example. 3.00, or fractionally, for example 2/1.

Using the examples above, let’s consider that you place a one euro bet on a team to win at those odds. In the instance of the decimal odds, if you place one euro, you will earn 3 euro if your bets wins. In the case of the fractional odds, if you place a one-euro bet, you will get back two euro, plus the one euro you staked, totalling three euro. So, 3.00 in decimal odds is in fact the same as 2/1 in decimal odds. In Ireland and the UK, fractional odds are usually used by bookmakers, but on all top online betting sites, you can choose to have the odds displayed as you wish.

Of course, not all bookmakers will have exactly the same odds for an outcome. For example, you could back Brazil to win the World Cup at 5/1 with one bookmaker, but you might find the same team at 11/2 with another. Of course, in that case it would be better to place the bet at 11/2, because the return on your stake would be better. That’s why it’s often a good idea to have an account with more than one bookmaker, so you can place your bet with the best odds.

Odds change too, of course, depending on events leading up to a match. And then the odds change after the match starts, but that’s okay as you can still place a bet – this is called live betting. All the top sports betting sites offer it, and it’s a good way to bring added excitement to a match, and even make money if you’re right!

World Cup Stats and History

We all love stats of some sort. And for your World Cup betting, stats matter. Indeed, all bookmakers and most bettors put their faith in statistical analysis to calculate the outcome of something. And while this is sport, so nothing can ever be certain, stats can give us an advantage when it terms to calculating the odds – that is the possibility – of something happening.

⚽ World Cup history

History may not be as reliable as stats when it comes to calculating an outcome, but it is a foolish bettor that doesn’t consider the weight of history when assessing the odds. For example, France are the reigning World Cup champions and are many people’s second favourites to win the trophy heading into this tournament. However, history tells us that it’s incredibly difficult for a team to defend a World Cup crown. In fact, it’s only ever been done twice – by Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962. That’s 60 years, or 15 World Cups, since it was last achieved. Now, we’re not saying it’s impossible, of course, but history tells us that it’s unlikely.

Additionally, the previous time France won the World Cup, in 1998, in the proceeding World Cup the team crashed out in the group stage. That surely won’t happen again. But anyone looking at the fact France won four years ago and are then thinking that the team should be odds on to do the same with a relatively similar team four years later, should consider the weight of history before placing that bet. The bookmakers certainly have, and that is one of the reasons that Brazil are more heavily fancied this time around.

⚽ Players and teams

For any World Cup predictions, we can look back on World Cups past and the statistics that matter. Indeed, for any successful World Cup betting, that’s exactly what you should do. For example, we know that England’s Harry Kane really stepped up to the mark by winning the Golden Boot in Russia four years ago. But we also know that no players has ever claimed the Golden Boot award twice. We also know that 6 goals is usually enough to win the aforementioned Golden Boot award – no player has scored more than 6 since Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) in 2002, when he notched 8. Indeed, 6 has been the magic number for all but three World Cups since 1974.

The importance of individual players can be overstated, of course, because it is ultimately a team game. But any World Cup predictions must factor in the fitness of particular star players who make their teams tick.

Conclusion about the World Cup

The World Cup is soccer’s showpiece event. The global audience is bigger than almost any other sporting event, and so much is riding on every single game, from personal glory to the prestige of a nation.
