Group A winners Uruguay will take on Group B runners up Portugal in the round of 16 clash in Sochi. The match will see Barcelona and Real Madrid rivals Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo go head-to-head for a place in the quarterfinals. La Celeste finished atop Group A, collecting 9 points from 9.
Oscar Tabarez’s side have failed to concede a goal thus far in the tournament and finally found their scoring boots against Russia with 3 goals against the hosts. It is a welcome sign going into the knockout stages, as both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez found their names on the scoresheet.
Portugal have seen a reverse in their goalscoring fortunes following 3 goals in their opening match, only mustering 1 in each of their final 2 group stage matches. Ronaldo and Portugal will be hoping to regain their scoring form against Uruguay and be the first team to beat Fernando Muslera in La Celeste’s goal. Ronaldo currently sits on 4 goals following the group stage, and remains firmly in the running for the tournament’s Golden Boot.
The bookmakers are finding it impossible to separate Uruguay and Portugal in what is sure to be an exciting, but tight, encounter in the round of 16. The Uruguayans eased into the knockout stages, winning all three of their matches and not conceding a single goal. Oscar Tabarez’s side have now won all six of their games in this calendar year and are yet to concede.
It was a slightly dicier group stage for Portugal, who edged past Morocco and drew with Spain and Iran. Indeed, the Iranians came within inches of knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo and his team mates in the final minutes of their meeting. But Fernando Santos’ men are unbeaten in competitive football since September 2016 themselves. The draw offers the best value at 2/1.
Uruguay have never been known for their free-flowing, attacking football, with boss Tabarez preferring to rely on his reliable backline to achieve results. Three consecutive clean sheets in Russia implies that’s the way to go – and with Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez at the other end, goals are a safe bet anyway.
Portugal have their own go-to for goals in Ronaldo but he was off the pace in his last game against Iran and was lucky to dodge a dismissal. Without him, it’s difficult to see where their goals are coming from. A 1-1 correct score is at 21/4.
Only three of Uruguay’s last eight matches have seen more than two goals scored – one of those coming against minnows Uzbekistan. Portugal are generally also involved in low-scoring matches, as the meetings with Iran and Morocco showed in the group stage.
With so much at stake, don’t expect too many goals in Sochi. Under 2.5 goals should be a given at 17/35.
- Portugal have never scored first and gone on to lose a World Cup match
- Uruguay have won their last three matches against European nations at the World Cup
