As Manchester City and Liverpool pull away in the title race, the EFL Cup offers its hand to two managers who could do with winning a trophy.

There’s always been tension between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea due to geographical location but in recent years the fixture has added an extra flavour of competitiveness.

Since Mauricio Pochettino’s magnificent job of turning Spurs into a side which the Premier League’s elite now take notice of, tempers have often flared when his side have faced off against Chelsea.

Whilst tempers flare, goals often flow. Recent score lines include 5-2, 4-2, 3-1, 2-2 and clean sheets are somewhat of a rarity.

As illustrated by the XI put out by both teams in the previous rounds of the competition, neither club were taking the competition particularly seriously. However, they’re now only three games away from picking up a trophy. This is of course a significant factor for Maurizio Sarri, who has never won a senior top flight trophy and the same for Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs’ last trophy was the League Cup itself in 2008 and betting sites made them strong contenders to win the competition this year from the off.

These combining factors should lead both teams to approach the tie with a moderate amount of seriousness. The Blues will be looking to take the game back to Stamford Bridge with a minimal goal deficit, but Spurs’ overloading and fluid attack will be too much to handle for this one. 2-0 Spurs.

Betting Tips

  • Spurs to win

Tottenham’s win against the Blues back in November was as convincing a win as you might see from his side. Sarri seemed to have no idea how to stop Spurs’ attack, despite being a great tactician it’s unlikely he’ll have figured out a way since then.

  • Both teams to score

There is almost always goals when these pair meet. In their last six meetings there’s been at least two goals in every game with an average of 3.5 goals per game with only one clean sheet in those previous six games.

Since that game, there’s been 60 wins for Chelsea, 35 draws and 47 wins for the Lilywhites.

The two sides do have history in the League Cup, meeting in 2015 when the Blues won 2-0 and in 2008, where Spurs won 2-1 in extra-time.

  • No team is fouled more times per game (12.4) than Chelsea in the Premier League this season.
  • Spurs’ Son Heung-Min is the League Cup’s joint-top scorer with three goals.
  • No player has assisted more goals in the Premier League this season than Eden Hazard (9).
  • The Lilywhites’ Kieran Trippier averages the second most crosses per game with 1.9.
