Rugby World Cup 2019 Quarter Finals: Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips

Rugby World Cup Quarter Finals
Rugby World Cup 2019 Quarter Finals

The Rugby World Cup’s last eight sees England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand still competitive, and hosts Japan provide a wildcard option.

Our Betting Tips

ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA

England’s Pool stage campaign ended quietly as their clash with France was called off, and Australia pushed past Georgia to secure a quarter final spot.

That abandoned game means that Eddie Jones’ side go into the knockout rounds without really being tested, whereas Australia have had to face Wales and Fiji already. That may hand the edge to the Wallabies.

AUSTRALIA TO WIN

NEW ZEALAND V IRELAND

Ireland’s Pool defeat to Japan has defined their tournament so far, with criticism levelled a Joe Schmidt’s side for not fulfilling their World No.1 status.

New Zealand on the other hand have been untouchable, with a cancelled game against Namibia (ending as a 0-0 draw) their only negative mark.

The All Blacks are chasing a third successive world title, and with Ireland struggling to meet expectations, they should have enough for a last four spot.

NEW ZEALAND TO WIN

WALES V FRANCE

Wales have been the competition’s outstanding side so far in Japan, with a 100% record and three bonus points for Warren Gatland’s side.

France have looked good too, with an unbeaten Pool stage record, but this will be their biggest test to date.

This could be the tightest of all of the quarter final games, but Wales should have enough to reach their second World Cup semi-finals in the last three competitions.

WALES TO WIN

JAPAN V SOUTH AFRICA

Japan have been the wildcard of the competition so far, with the joint-best points total, alongside Wales.

Their win over Ireland has boosted confidence that they could cause a real upset as hosts, and despite South Africa presenting a different type of challenge for Jamie Joseph’s side, they look in good shape.

The home nation have kept it tight so far, with just one of their four wins so far with a 20+ plus winning margin – and this game is expected to follow suit.

JAPAN TO WIN BY 1-12 POINTS

Statistics

Head to Head

England haven’t lost to Australia since a match at Twickenham in 2015 in that year’s World Cup.

New Zealand and Ireland last met in November 2018 and the Irish won, 16-9.

Wales beat France in this year’s Six Nations, 24-19 at the Stade de France.

South Africa and Japan have met twice – as recently as September, when the latter won 41-7.

Stats

  • The two leading try scorers in the tournament – Japan’s Kotaro Matsushima and Wales’ Josh Adams – remain in the competition, and both have five tries to date.
  • South Africa’s Elton Jantjies leads the way in conversions with 14.
  • Japan fly-half Yu Tamura is the tournament’s leading points scorer, putting up 48 – nine conversions and 10 penalties.
  • There has already been more than 1m spectators taking in matches at the tournament.

Our Prediction

Australia, New Zealand, Wales and Japan to win

A final four of Australia, New Zealand, Wales and Japan would have raised eyebrows at the start of the tournament, mostly for the presence of the hosts. But Japan can beat South Africa and if they do reach the semi-final stage, not only will they be there on merit, but they’ll be the sentimental favourites too.
