UEFA Nations League Portugal vs Netherlands
Portugal vs Netherlands Nations League

  The match is over.
Score: 1-0.

The inaugural UEFA Nations League comes to a close as hosts Portugal face the Netherlands in the final.

It was the Cristiano Ronaldo show in the semi-final, as the Juventus star showed exactly why he is considered one of the finest ever football players. His hat-trick against Switzerland saved some awkward questions of the officiating after a controversial VAR decision had given the Swiss a penalty to equalise. But Ronaldo went on to score two late goals and lead his team, once again, to a final.

The Netherlands needed extra time – and some woeful defensive mistakes – to overcome England, but will now be confident going into the Nations League final, even if the bookies have them as underdogs. Matthijs de Ligt made up for giving a penalty away earlier in the game when he headed home the equaliser – and Depay and Promes finished off the scoring in extra time to put the Oranje through.

Portugal’s only defeat in the past 12 months was to Uruguay in last summer’s World Cup and, although Ronaldo must get a lot of the praise, there is a very good team behind him powering on to glory. Bernado Silva was especially good against Switzerland and may take over some of the build-up play in the final if the Dutch attempt to mark Ronaldo out of the game.

Most sports betting sites have Portugal as favourites to win the Nations League but the Netherlands seem to be making a return to the top table of European football – and will be desperate for some silverware after missing out on successive major tournaments. It might be tight but Portugal should be able to use their home advantage, however – and could win this 2-1.

Betting Tips

This could be a really interesting game but Ronaldo, in the form that he is in, should be able to help the home side win.

After his semi final hat-trick, surely Ronaldo will get on the score sheet once again. Unibet have Ronaldo to score at any time at 13/10.

Head to Head

Portugal have traditionally enjoyed this fixture but have not beaten the Netherlands since 2012 – and lost the last game between the two last year 3-0.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo needs another hat-trick to add to the three against Switzerland if he wants to become the top goal scorer in the Group A section of the Nations League.
  • The Netherlands averaged two goals a game in their Nations League group games – and then scored another three against England in the semi-final.
  • Although somewhat dismissed by some fans, the Nations League is an extra way into the European Championship – won by Portugal in 2016.
  • The Netherlands did not qualify for either the 2016 European Championship or the World Cup in 2018. So a Nations League victory would definitely be celebrated as a return to form.
