Manchester City vs FC Basel Match Preview
FC Basel have the daunting prospect of a trip to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday the 7th of March to face up against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 fixture.
Manchester City are buoyantly coming into this fixture off the back of a dominant 4-0 away win in the first leg, a League Cup final victory against Arsenal and a league win against the same opposition – they are arguably the best team in Europe right now.
This doesn’t bode well for FC Basel, who already have a four-goal deficit from the 1st leg, and while the Swiss side have an excellent record against English side’s in Europe, this game really looks like it is Pep Guardiola’s side for the taking.
Bookmakers are mirroring this view with their odds on the match, with Manchester City rightly huge favourites. The home side are currently at the very short odds of 13/100 – which is in sharp contrast to Basel, who sit at 23/1 to win the match. A draw in the game is at odds of 8/1.
After the demolition on away grounds, City are expected to build-upon their dominance in the second leg. There are odds of 13/25 for both teams not to score, although with City perhaps playing a weakened team due to their lead, the odds of 37/25 to both teams finding the scoresheet may also be appealing.
In terms of goal scorers, Leroy Sane will be looking to continue his excellent form after a magnificent display against Arsenal in the Premier League, and may find the net.
Whatever the result in this fixture, it looks likely Basel will be bowing out of Europe due to the aggregate score deficit (barring a near-miracle) and City will be marching onto the quarter finals.
