Man City vs Southampton: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds
A Southampton side struggling for goals travel to face Manchester City at the Etihad, with the Premier League holders in rampant form at the top of the table.
Southampton find themselves the beneficiaries of woeful starts by the sides below them. Despite only winning once this season, Cardiff City, Fulham, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town have all been worse, with the latter two sides yet to win a game.
It somewhat masks what has been a poor start for Mark Hughes’ side, who have not won in six games. At home to a dismal Newcastle side last week they looked equally inept as the two sides laboured to a meek 0-0.
Manchester City, meanwhile, were able to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season in a tough away fixture at Tottenham, dealing with a pitch savaged by NFL action the day before.
Guardiola’s side have been successfully juggling Premier League and Champions League action, and after arduous games against Shakhtar Donetsk and Spurs, a home tie to struggling Southampton is a blessing. City should be comfortable 2-0 or 3-0 winners.
- Man City win to nil
Manchester City are the Premier League’s top scorers this season, while Southampton are among the lowest. Sometimes it Is that simple. Southampton have failed to score in their past five league games, of which they have lost three.
Danny Ings has cooled off after his great start, and fellow strikers Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long have been woefully out of form.
Moreover City currently have the best defensive record in the league, conceding only three goals.
- Under 3.5 goals
We have already established just how poor Southampton are in goal, as well as how staunch City’s defence are, so don’t bet on Mark Hughes’s side scoring. But don’t bet on them conceding too many either. But for a few late goals, City would have dropped points in both of their games against City last year.
Mark Hughes has been outspoken on his side’s focus on defence in training, and given his previous meetings with Guardiola, expect them to keep it tight at the back for as long as they can.
1 x 2 Odds
For Southampton, their encounters with Man City last season were heart-breaking affairs. After appearing to hold on to a 1-1 draw against then-unbeaten City, Raheem Sterling popped up with a 96th minute winner.
In the reverse fixture Gabriel Jesus scored in the final moments of injury time to earn a narrow in for City.
Their overall record stretches all the way back to 1910, and is extremely close, with the Saints narrowly behind with 31 wins to City’s 32, and 25 draws.
