Group G – Stadion Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod – TV: RTE
England will try to make it two wins from two at the World Cup when they face Panama in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday afternoon. The Three Lions struck in injury time to beat Tunisia in their opening match while Panama lost 3-0 to Belgium.
After Harry Kane’s late winner against Tunisia, England can put themselves in an excellent position in Group G if they see off Panama. Gareth Southgate’s men are on an 11-match unbeaten run which stretches back over more than a year. England haven’t lost a competitive fixture since their shock exit to Iceland at the European Championships two years ago.
Panama huffed and puffed against Belgium and even held Eden Hazard and co until half time. But the Central Americans definitely tired and struggled to cope with the Red Devils’ attacking riches.
England don’t have the same creativity levels as Belgium but certainly have enough to beat a team who has only won against CONCACAF minnows since qualifying for the finals back in October. The English are at 1/6 to win.
Panama may have been soundly beaten by Roberto Martinez’s side in their first match but they aren’t brushed aside too often. Since qualifying, Switzerland are the only other outfit to have ripped apart Panama, with fellow World Cup finals participants Iran and Denmark only beating them by a single goal.
As well as that, England don’t score many, netting just seven times in their last nine. A lack of cutting edge was present against the Tunisians; England wasted several clear-cut chances and both of Kane’s goals came from set pieces.
It’s not likely to be a walkover in Nizhny Novgorod. A 2-0 win is at 4/1.
Panama’s passion was clear to see in their opening match and while Hernan Gomez’s side may have been overwhelmed by the occasion at first, they soon settled. Belgium were frustrated but were also maybe guilty of being overly conservative in their attacking approach.
England will line up with a similar system to the Belgians on Sunday and don’t be surprised if the match takes a similar form. Patience will certainly be key against a Panama side who will be compact and tough to break down.
Under 2.5 goals is at 11/10.
England and Panama will face each other in their second fixture of Group G play. This could prove a pivotal match in determining who qualifies from the group with England alongside Belgium as favourites with Panama and Tunisia looking to cause an upset.
- England have conceded just three goals in their last nine games
- Harry Kane has scored 15 times in his 25 England caps –
Kane to score a hat-trick – 17/2
- Raheem Sterling is without a goal in his previous 21 England appearances
- Panama have conceded more than one goal just twice in their last seven games –
Panama +2 – 7/5
- Panama had five players booked against Belgium – more than any other nation in their first game
These two nations have never previously played each other.
World Cup Qualifiers
England are in their sixth consecutive World Cup finals but will be hoping to improve on their 2014 showing, when they were eliminated at the group stage phase.
A new-look squad under Gareth Southgate will be reliant on the form of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling and Tottenham stars Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Panama’s qualification was one of the stories of the qualification process, with the underdogs advancing at the expense of the United States of America.
Los Canaleros have no players based in any major European league and will not set any targets in a group from which they are unlikely to advance.
