Dembele to Hinder Dortmund’s Opener?
Borussia Dortmund begin their new Bundesliga campaign on Aug 19, when they take on Wolfsburg. Peter Bosz takes over at the club following the acrimonious departure of Thomas Tuchel this summer and will be aiming to get off to the best possible start.
Once again, the club are rebuilding after a summer of change at the Westfalenstadion, with the departures of Matthias Ginter and Sven Bender. Ousmane Dembele appears to be the latest player heading for the exit with the talented star continually linked with a move to Barcelona this summer. The 20-year-old skipped training this week, prompting the club to suspend him amid intense speculation around his departure
The new boss has managed to add Maximilian Phillip, Omer Toprak and Mahmoud Dahoud and they could all play some part against Wolfsburg. Dortmund’s mixed away form saw them fall short of any title challenge last season and Bosz will be aiming to start the campaign with three points on the road.
Wolfsburg survived by the skin of their teeth last season, needing a relegation playoff to secure their place in the top flight. They will be without US International John Brooks, who picked up an injury during his debut in the DFB Pokal against Eintracht Norderstedt.
The Bundesliga is just one of many top flight European leagues which get underway on the weekend commencing August 18 and other fixtures to look out for include champions Bayern Munich hosting Bayer Leverkusen whilst RB Leipzig face a tough away trip to Schalke. Hamburger SV, who survived yet again host Augsburg whilst Hoffenheim are odds-on favourites as they take on Werder Bremen. Finally, Borussia Monchengladbach host FC Koln and Freiburg welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to the Schwarzwald Stadion on August 20.
