Croatia vs England: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds
England head to Rijeka to face their World Cup eliminators Croatia in a UEFA Nations League game with a twist.
This match is to be played behind closed doors as the Croatian FA were handed a two-match punishment after a swastika was marked into the pitch at Stadin Poljud prior to a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy in June 2015. This is the second game of the punishment.
They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but is it already too late for England to save face after their World Cup woe, when Croatia ended the Three Lions’ tournament at the semi-final stage.
The game will have an eerie feel to it and it is hard to see how that will aid either side.
After both sides’ World Cup heroics, things have not quite gone to plan for the pair since.
Gareth Southgate avoided becoming the first England manager to lose four games in a row after his side narrowly overcame a spirited Switzerland 1-0 whilst Croatia suffered a 6-0 humiliation at the hands of Spain, who also beat England 2-1 that same week.
It looks like the World Cup hangover is still attached to Croatia after shipping 11 goals in their last three games and it is because of that we go for England to edge this one 2-1.
- Both teams to score
Although the home side failed to net against Spain last time out, that was the first time in 10 games that the Croatians had didn’t find the back of the net, whilst England have scored in 11 of their last 13 games.
- The draw at half time
Both sides have a habit of scoring in the fist half. England have netted three of their last five in the opening 45 minutes (with two of them in the opening 11 minutes) whilst Croatia have scored two of their last three in the first half, making a 1-1 stalemate the most likely half-time scenario.

Head to Head
Few people will need reminding that it was Croatia who dumped England out of the 2018 World Cup at the semi-final stage after extra-time in July.
The less said about that the better but over the course of time, it is England who harbour the edge even if Croatia did prevent England from qualifying for Euro 2008.
Since the sides first meeting ended in a 0-0 stalemate in 1996, The Three Lions has gone on to win four of the following seven games with Croatia snatching the other three including that crucial World Cup semi-final win.
- Croatia knocked England out of the 2018 World Cup thanks to a Mario Mandzukic strike in extra-time.
- Both England and Croatia lost their opening UEFA Nations League match to the same opponent, Spain.
- Croatia were beaten finalists at this year’s World Cup losing to France 4-2.
- In total, England have won four of the eight meetings between the two with Croatia claiming three wins.
- Croatia beat England 3-2 on English soil in November 2007 to end the Three Lions’ hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.
