Group A

Uruguay: Uruguay are favourites to finish at the top of Group A. They finished second in the CONMEBOL standings and are ranked at number 21 in the FIFA rankings. They have appeared in 12 World Cups and won two titles. They have been in 5 semi-finals and 2 finals. Their last World Cup win was in 1950. Their coach is Oscar Washington Tabarez who is behind their 2011 Copa America title win. Their star player is Luis Suarez, a prolific striker and their all-time leading goalscorer. He is a European and world cup champion with Barcelona and has scored five times at the FIFA world cup.

15th June 2018 Egypt v Uruguay

Russia: As the host country, they automatically qualified for the World Cup 2018. They have made 10 appearances in the World Cup so far and haven’t won any titles. They have made it to the semi-finals once. They are ranked at 65 according to FIFA rankings. This team is expected to finish second in Group A and they could be a team that will surprise us. Their best achievement to date has been fourth place in the 1966 World Cup. Stanislav Cherchesov is the coach and is a former USSR and Russia international goalkeeper. Their star player is Igor Akinfeev a six-time Russian title winner who has over 100 caps for his country.

14th June 2018 Russia vs Saudi Arabia

Egypt: Egypt booked their place by topping Group E with a game in hand to make their first appearance in over 28 years. They have made two appearances in the world cup in total and have not won any titles. They have a FIFA ranking position of 31 and are expected to place third in the group. They haven’t appeared in any finals and have only ever made it to the first stage. The last World Cup they qualified for was back in 1990. Hector Cuper is their coach and a former coach of Valencia. He took charge in 2015 and led Egypt to the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Final. Their star player is Mohamed Salah who also players for Liverpool in the FA Premiership. He has scored 71% of Egypt’s goals in the qualifying rounds.

Saudi Arabia: Saudia Arabia are expected to come bottom of Group A. This will be their first World Cup since 2006 and their fifth appearance at a World Cup. Their current FIFA ranking is 63. Their best achievement was to get to the Round of 16 in the 1994 World Cup. Juan Antonio PIzzi is their coach and he took charge back in November 2017 when his time in charge of Chile ended. He failed to get Chile into the World Cup in 2018. He was a prolific forward in his playing days with Spain. The star player for Saudi Arabia is Mohammad Al-Sahlawi and he finished joint-top goalscorer in the qualifiers with 16 goals. He will be one to watch in this competition.

14th June 2018 Russia v Saudi Arabia

Group B

Spain: Spain are expected to come out on top of Group B. They won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and have appeared in 14 World Cups so far. They have a FIFA ranking of 6. They have appeared in two World Cup semi-finals to date. Spain’s manager is their coach. He’s a former Barcelone and Real Madrid goalkeeper and he has been in charge since 2016. Spain’s star player is Sergio Ramos and he is their second most capped player. He also captains La Roja and was a key player in Two European Champions and a World Cup.

16th June 2018 Portugal v Spain

Portugal: Portugal are the second favourite for Group and the current European Champions finished top of Group B in the qualifiers. They have appeared in six World Cup tournaments, but haven’t won any. Their current FIFA ranking is 3. Their best World Cup achievement was 3rd place back in 1966. Fernando Santos is their coach. He made history by leading Portugal to their first major tournament success at EURO 2016 and followed this by getting them through to Russia 2018. Their star player is Cristiano Ronaldo who is also one of the favourites for the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup. He is one of the greatest football players in history and will definitely be one to watch.

16th June 2018 Portugal v Spain

Morocco: Morocco are tipped to finish in third place in Group B. They haven’t been to a World Cup in 20 years. They have played in four World Cup tournaments and the have a FIFA ranking of 40. Their best achievement to date was getting to Round of 16 back in 1986. Herve Renard is their coach and is also the first coach to win the CAF Africa Cup of Nations with different countries. He took charge of Morocco in 2016 and has led them to their first World Cup since 1998. Their star player is Medhi Benatia, one of the best defenders in Africa. He also played for Bayern Munich and Juventus.

15th June 2018 Morocco v Iran

Iran: Iran are expected to finish last in Group B. They were the first AFC team to book their place in Russia 2018. They have a FIFA ranking of 32 and have appeared in four World Cup championships. They have never progressed past the first stage. Carlos Queiroz is their coach. He’s Portuguese and this is his third World Cup. He has also won two FIFA U-20 World Cup titles with Portugal and has had a near flawless campaign so far. Iran’s star player is Sardar Azmoun, a striker who burst onto the scene at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. He is one to watch for in Iran’s games.

15th June 2018 Morocco v Iran

Group C

France: France are tipped to take first position in Group C. They won their place at Russia 2018 by topping Group A in the qualifiers. They have appeared in fourteen World Cups and have won one title back in 1998. They have a FIFA ranking of 9. They have appeared in two finals, and 5 semi-finals to date. Didier Deschamps is their coach and the captain of the team that won the World Cup back in 1998. He has been coaching the team since 2012. Their star player is Antoine Griezmann who is also one of the favourites for the top goalscorer. He was the top scorer and player at UEFA EURO 2016 and he provided four goals and four assists for France in the qualifiers.

Denmark: Denmark are the favourites for second place in Group C. They booked their place at Russia 2018 thanks to a 5-1 aggregate play-off win over the Republic of Ireland. They have appeared in four World Cups but haven’t won a title yet. They have a FIFA ranking of 12. Their best achievement to date was reaching the quarter finals in 1998. Age Hareide is their coach after succeeding Morten Olsen in 2016. He is a former Norway international defender. Their star player is Christian Eriksen who is well known and has been on form throughout the qualifying campaign. He scored 11 of Europe’s Russia 2018 preliminary goals.

16th June 2018 Peru v Denmark

Peru: Peru are set to come in third in Group C. They haven’t been to a World Cup in 36 years. They have played in four World Cups but haven’t won any titles. They have a FIFA ranking of 11. Their best achievement was reaching the quarter finals in 1970 and 1978. Ricardo Gareca has been coach since 2015. He is nicknamed El Tigre and have led Peru to its first world cup in 36 years. Their star player is Jefferson Farfan, an experience forward who has contributed vital goals in the wins of Paraguay and New Zealand.

16th June 2018 Peru v Denmark

Australia: Australia are the underdog in this Group and are tipped to come in last place. They have appeared in four World Cups and have a FIFA ranking of 39. Their best achievement to date has been reaching the Round of 16 in 2006. Bert Van Marwijk is their coach and he was only appointed in January after Ange Postecoglou resigned in November 2017. Van Marwijk has lots of experience and helped Saudi Arabia reach Russia 2018. Their star player is Tim Cahill, a forward that has scored 11 goals on the way to Russia 2018. He is the scorer of one of the most spectacular goals of Brazil 2014 and will be one to watch.

Group D

Argentina: Argentina are not only tipped to top Group D, but they are also in the top five for overall winner too. They have made 16 world cup appearances to date and have won 2 titles. Their FIFA ranking is 4. They have appeared in 5 finals and 5 semi-finals with their last World Cup win in 1986. Jorge Sampaoli is their coach and he led Chile to the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup. Their star player is Lionel Messi who is also in the running for top goalscorer. He is considered one of the best football players in the world and has been voted FIFA’s player of the year on five different occasions.

16th June 2018 Argentina v Iceland

Croatia: Croatia are favourites for second place in Group D and have appeared in 4 World Cups. They haven’t won a title yet. They have a FIFA ranking of 17. They have appeared in one semi-final. Their best achievement is reaching third place in 1998. Zlatko Dalic is their coach having replaced Ante Cacic in October 2017. He previously coached UAE club Al-Ain and led them to the 2016 AFT Champions League final. Their star player is Luka Modric one of the best midfielders. 16th June 2018 Croatia v Nigeria

Nigeria: Nigeria are expected to finish third in Group D. They have only missed on tournament since they qualified for their debut back in 1994. They have been in five World Cups but haven’t won any titles. They have a FIFA ranking of 50. Their best achievement has been reaching Round of 16 in 1994, 1998, and 2014. Their coach is Gernot Rohr one of the most experienced coaches in Africa. He has been in charge since 2016. Iceland: Iceland are expected to finish bottom of Group D. This is their first World Cup tournament and all eyes will be on them to see how they do. They have a FIFA ranking of 22. Heimir Hallgrimsson is their coach. He has overseen their remarkable rise and led the team with Lars Lagerback at UEFA EURO 2016. They are the smallest country by population to every qualify for the World Cup. Their star player is Gylfi Sigurdsson a midfield player who has been named footballer of the year in Iceland for the last five years. Group E

Brazil: Brazil are favourites to top Group E. They were the first CONMEBOL team to book their place at Russia 2018. Brazil have appeared in 20 World Cups and won 5 titles. They have a FIFA ranking of 2. They won titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. They have appeared in 7 finals. Tite is their coach and since he took over in June 2016 they have been spectacular. Their star player is Neymar who is a FIFA Confederations Cup winner and an Olympic gold medallist. He also won the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup with former club Barcelona. He is one of the favourites for top goalscorer too.

17th June 2018 Brazil v Switzerland

Switzerland: Switzerland are second place favourites in Group E. They have appeared in 10 World Cups but have yet to win a title. They have a FIFA ranking of 8. Their best achievement has been to reach the quarter finals in 1934, 1938, and 1954.Their coach is Vladimir Petkovic who will be making his debut at a FIFA competition. He took charge after the 2014 World Cup. Their star player is Granit Xhanka who was Switzerland’s player of the year for 2017. The Arsenal midfielder will be looking to make his mark at this World Cup.

Serbia: Serbia are tipped to come in third in Group E. They have appeared in 11 World Cups and have yet to win a title. They have a FIFA ranking of 37. They have appeared in two semi-finals and their best achievement is fourth place in 1930 and 1962. Their coach is Mladen Krstajic a former international defender. He has been in charge since October 2017. Their star player is Branislav Ivanovic who has been the team’s captain since 2012. Costa Rica: Costa Rica are tipped to come in bottom of Group E. They have appeared in four World Cups but haven’t won any. They have a FIFA ranking of 26. Their best achievement to date has been to reach the quarter finals in 2014. Oscar Ramirez is their coach and has been in charge since August 2015. Their star player is Bryan Ruiz an attacking midfielder who can also play as a second striker. Ruiz was a key player in Costa Rica’s quarter finals at Brazil 2014 and has scored three goals in the Russia 2018 qualifiers.

Group F

Germany: Germany are favourites to top Group F. The current title holders are also favourites to win Russia 2018. They have appeared in 18 World Cups and have won the title four times. They have a FIFA ranking of 1. They will be looking to retain their title. Joachim Low is the coach and all eyes will be on him to see if he can win a second title. Their star player is Toni Kroos one of the best midfielders in the competition and a key component to the team. He has won the UEFA Champions League with both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Mexico: Mexico are tipped to take second place in Group F. They secured their Russia 2018 place with three matches remaining. They have appeared in 15 World Cups but have yet to win a title. Korea Republic: Korea Republic are tipped to take bottom place in Group F. They are the only side outside of Europe and South America to be ever-present since 1986. They have appeared in 9 World Cups but haven’t won any titles. They have a FIFA ranking of 59. Their best achievement has been to reach fourth place in 2002. Their coach is Shin Tae-Yong who was appointed in July 2017. He is a former midfielder. Their star player is Ki Sung-Yueng and this will be his third FIFA World Cup. Group G

Belgium: Belgium are favourites to top Group G. They have appeared in 12 World Cups but haven’t won a title yet. They have a FIFA ranking of 5. England: England are the favourites to take second place in Group G. This is their sixth consecutive World Cup and they have appeared in fourteen altogether. They have won one title. They have a FIFA ranking of 15. They have appeared in 2 semi-finals and their best achievement is winning the world cup in 1966. Gareth Southgate is their coach and he has been in charge since September 2016. Their star player is Harry Kane who is also a favorite for the top goalscorer of the competition. Tunisia: Tunisia are tipped to take third place in Group G. This is their first World Cup appearance in 12 years. They have appeared in four World Cups and they have a FIFA ranking of 27. They have never made it past the group stages. Their coach is Nabil Maaloul who has been in charge since April 2017. He is a former midfielder and leads Tunisia in their first World Cup in 12 years. Their star player is Youssef Msankni a star striker and the man behind Tunsia’s qualifying campaign. He scored vital goals including a hat-trick.

Panama: Panama are favourites to finish bottom of Group G. This is their first World Cup appearance and they had a dramatic win over Costa Rica on the final matchday of CONCACAF qualifiers. They have a FIFA ranking of 56. Their coach is Hernan Dario Gomez who was appointed back in 2014 and made history by leading Panama to their first FIFA World Cup. Their star player is Blas Perez who has over a century of appearances for Panama. He has appeared in four World Cup qualifying campaigns and scored over 11 goals during that time.

Group H

Colombia: Columbia are the favourites to top Group H. They have appeared in four World Cups but have not won a title. They have a FIFA ranking of 13. Their best achievement is reaching the quarter finals in 2014. Their coach is Jose Pekerman who has been in charge since 2012. He has plenty of experience with the World Cup having been in charge of Germany in 2006 and Columbia in 2014. Their star player is James Rodriguez who was the Adidas Golden Boot winner at Brazil 2014. He will be hoping to score a lot more goals for Columbia at Russia 2018.

Poland: Poland are tipped to take second place in Group H. Russia 2018 sees them return to the World Cup after a 12-year absence. They have appeared in 7 World Cups but have not won a title. Senegal: Senegal are tipped to take third place in Group H. They are another team who are making an appearance after a long absence. Senegal haven’t played in the World Cup for 16 years. They have only been in one World Cup and they have a FIFA ranking of 23. Their best achievement was reaching the quarter finals in 2002. Their coach is Aliou Cisse who was the captain of the Senegal team that made history at the 2002 World Cup and reached the quarter finals in their debut appearance. He has been in charge since 2015. Their star player is Sadio Mane who became the most expensive African player in history when he moved to Liverpool for £34 million in 2016.

19th June 2018 Poland v Senegal

Japan: Japan are tipped to finish bottom of Group H. They have appeared in five World Cups but have not won any titles. They have a FIFA ranking of 55. Their best achievement so far is to have reached Round of 16 in 2002 and again in 2010. Their coach is Vahid Halilhodzic who has World Cup experience as a player and as a coach. The Bosnian has taken Japan to their sixth successive World Cup. Their star player is Maya Yoshida, a centre-back who has been vital to Japan’s team over two World Cup campaigns. Yoshida plays for Southampton and has contributed his share of goals too.
