Can the BDO World Championship Throw Up a Surprise Winner?
BDO World Darts Championship
The PDC William Hill World Darts Championship produced one of the sporting stories of the year despite concluding on the first day of 2018 as Rob Cross beat Phil Taylor at Alexandra Palace to upset the odds. The BDO World Championship is also hoping to hit the headlines with an equally inspiring underdog story but which players are likely to cause a stir at Lakeside?
Glen Durrant has been chalked up as the favourite for the event and is priced at 11/10 with William Hill but with plenty of dangers lurking in the draw, he could be susceptible with a number of unfancied players, all of whom will be desperate to create a name for themselves at this tournament. Mark McGeeney is just one of a number of players to be wary of after he knocked out crowd favourite Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams in the opening round. McGeeney is highly rated and comes into the tournament ranked as the BDO number one, meaning a victory wouldn’t rank anywhere close to a great underdog story. Paddy Power, who are amongst BettingTop10’s recommended online bookmakers for betting on darts, have him priced at 20/1 to take the title and he could definitely be worth a second glance in the outright market.
Michi Unterbuchner became the first German player to reach the second round of the tournament after progressing past affable Canadian David Cameron on January 8th and if he can improve his conversion on the doubles, he could be a real threat at around 50/1. Welshman Wayne Warren has also reached the second round after beating Wesley Harms 3-1 on January 7th and could provide competition for some of the big boys.
The Netherlands have a great pedigree in this sport and Derk Telnekes is a real outsider for the tournament. He is ranked 37 by the BDO and was a winner of 2017’s Belgium Open. He showed few signs of nerves when progressing into the second round courtesy of a straight-sets victory over Chris Landman and may exceed all expectations.
