Steve Clarke’s baptism of fire in the Scotland hotseat faces a stern test in Belgium as the World Cup semi-finalists look to cement their tag as one of the favourites for the tournament before it has even begun.

Predictions

New Scotland boss Steve Clarke will have always known there was much to do in charge of his nation and on Tuesday he will see just how much work he has to do as his Scottish charges take on one of Europe’s leading sides in their own backyard.

However, Scotland can take some heart having won their two of their last three away European qualifying games even if their opponents were not quite at the level of Belgium.

San Marino and Gibraltar (in 2015) were the Scottish victims but a shock loss to Kazakhstan in match day one effectively cost Clarke’s predecessor Alex McLeish his job.

The pressure is on the Scots then as it is Belgium as they look to maintain to their elite European status.

Understandably, Belgium enter the game as clear favourites with popular sportsbooks not just because of their superior FIFA ranking, but because of their far superior squad.

It will take an almighty shock for Scotland to topple Belgium in their own capital city and we don’t expect them to do it, however, we do fancy them to score having netted in seven of their last nine Euro qualifiers on the road making a Belgium 4-1 win the way to go.

Head to Head

The two sides have met five times this millennium and it makes for grim reading for the Scots with Belgium winning four and a single draw.

In fact, in eighteen meetings, Scotland have only managed four wins with the last of those coming in October 1987.

The last time the pair met was in 2018 in an international friendly in which Belgium swept to a 4-0 victory at Hampden Park.
