• 1998 – Becks sees red. Once again facing old foes Argentina, a promising England team crashed out on penalties after David Beckham lashed out at Diego Simeone, picking up a very avoidable red card. It would not be the last time England would lose on penalties…
• 2018 – England reach the World Cup semi-finals. Going into the tournament, expectations were fairly relaxed. But some good results and a fortunate draw meant England made it all the way to the semi-finals. They were odds-on favourites to beat opponents Croatia, but succumb to an extra-time strike from Mario Mandžukić.
• 2021 – Finals at Wembley. In a tournament hosted across multiple countries, England went one better than in 2018 and reached the final. They faced Italy in a tough game which, once again, ended up with penalties. Italy emerged victorious, leaving England fans distraught.

The short answer is: yes, the England national football team can certainly win the World Cup in 2022. Whether they will or not is a different story.

If we look at past results, it’s clear that England are progressing. In 2018 they reached the semis of the World Cup, and in 2021 they made the finals of the Euros. Harry Kane even picked up a Golden Boot along the way.

The players are growing in experience and will become more and more comfortable in those high-pressure matches. It’s also interesting that this World Cup takes place in the winter. Could the England national football team perform better in the middle of their regular season, rather than at the end of it, when the players are fatigued?

There’s a reason the England national football team are among the favourites. For that reason alone, a bet on England to win the World Cup is very reasonable.
