With a quarter final place at stake, West Ham welcome Spurs to east London for the tie of the round.

The 8-0 thrashing of Macclesfield Town in the last round came around the time West Ham’s season was starting to kick in after a dreadful opening couple of months. Although things have dropped off slightly in the league in the last few weeks Manuel Pellegrini will be looking at this competition as a great chance to bring some silverware to the club.

It looked like two late goals in their third round match against Watford was going to be enough to put them through – but an even later goal by the visitors meant the crowd at Stadium MK saw a match go straight to penalties with extra time being scrapped in the EFL Cup this season. Tottenham scored all their spot kicks to go through but other competitions take precedent for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

West Ham have only recently entertained Spurs in the league, with Erik Lamela’s goal giving the north London club the three points. But there are bound to be a few changes in personnel for this one and it may be a case of which team are more hungrier for the win that goes through to the next round.

Spurs are looking good in the Premier League this season, while their Champions League campaign looks like it could come to an early finish at the end of the group stage. The EFL Cup comes well down the list of priorities and that could make all the difference for a West Ham side who would love a cup final day out – as well as an opportunity to put one over their cross town rivals. West Ham to win this one 3-1.

Betting Tips

  • West Ham to win

The form book sometimes goes out of the window with League Cup matches and with Spurs concentrating on other competitions a home win for the Hammers could be a distinct possibility.

  • Both teams to score

With unfamiliar defensive units on display there are usually a few goals in the EFL Cup and it seems likely that both teams with find the net here.

Head to Head

These two sides met each other at the same stage last year with West Ham going through after being two goals down. Spurs have already beaten the Hammers this season however.

  • West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski has been very busy in the Premier League this season – making the most saves of any keeper so far.
  • Spurs played their last EFL Cup match in Milton Keynes as neither their new White Hart Lane ground or their temporary Wembley home were available.
  • West Ham’s 8-0 victory over Macclesfield was by far the biggest win of this year’s competition. Only Blackburn Rovers have scored more than four goals in a match.
  • Dele Alli has fond memories of Milton Keynes have played for them before his move to Spurs – and he also scored a penalty in normal time and one in the shoot out to see of Watford in the last round.
