Score: 4-0.

Uruguay face Ecuador on Sunday in their opening game in this year’s Copa America tournament, which is being played in Brazil.

Uruguay beat Panama 3-0 in a friendly warm-up match played in Montevideo last Saturday – They won the China Cup in March by beating Uzbekistan 3-0 and then hammering Thailand 4-0 in the final. However, they lost their four previous games which were all friendlies. Uruguay went out at the group stage of the last edition of the Copa America, finishing behind Mexico and Venezuela.

Ecuador lost 3-2 to Mexico in a friendly warm-up match played in Texas on the weekend, that defeat made it four games without a win as they drew 1-1 with Venezuela, 0-0 with Honduras, and lost 1-0 to the United States. Ecuador were knocked out by the United States at the quarter-final stage in the last Copa America after they finished ahead of Brazil in the group stage.

Uruguay finished second in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with 31 points out of 18 matches, they topped their group in Russia last summer, and knocked out Portugal 2-1 in the Round of 16 before losing 2-0 to eventual Champions France in the quarter-finals.

Ecuador finished in eighth place in CONMEBOL World Cup qualification on 20 points, and failed to qualify after winning their first four games, including a 2-0 win away to Argentina and 2-1 win at home against Uruguay. They ended up losing the return fixture against Uruguay in Montevideo 2-1 in November 2016. A 1-0 win for Uruguay is well worth a shout.

Betting Tips

Uruguay will want to do better than their last appearance in the Copa America and with Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez on the field they should have a good chance at winning.

Seven of the last 12 matches between the sides have be won by a solitary goal and that could be why the bookies are offering odds for the Total Goals under 1.5 market.

Head to Head

In the past 12 meetings between these sides it is Uruguay who come out on top in the historical head to head with six wins, compared to two for Ecuador and there have been four draws.

  • Uruguay have won just one of their last six games in the Copa America, which was a 3-0 win over Jamaica in 2016. You would have to go back to 2011 the year they last won the competition for their last semi-final appearance.
  • Ecuador have only won two of their last 14 matches in the Copa America, a 2-1 victory over Mexico in 2015, and a 4-0 win over Haiti in 2016.
  • Uruguay have won the Copa America 15 times, the most any country has managed, and they will be hoping to lift the trophy for the first time since 2011.
  • Ecuador have never won the Copa America, but have reached the semi-finals on two occasions, the first of which was in 1959 and the latest in 1993 when they lost 2-0 to Mexico.
