Serie A Big Dogs Got off to a Great Start, But Can They Keep it Up?
When it comes to the title race, Week 1 of Serie A went exactly as planned, with as many title contenders as the Premier League making early claims. AS Roma nailed in a 1-0 win away to Atalanta, AC Milan and Inter Milan defeated their opponents 3-0, SSC Napoli won 3-1 – only conceding when a penalty after a red card was put away – and the reigning champions Juventus also won 3-0.
Elsewhere, Bologna and Torino ended in a 1-1 draw, Lazio versus Spal and Sassuolo versus Genoa both ended scoreless, and Sampdoria came back to claim all three points against Benevento. Finally, Chievo chiselled out a win in Udine – against Udinese.
Next comes Week 2, which will see giants clash for the first time this season.
On Saturday, August 26, Juventus kick off the week when they travel to Genoa and are 21/50 favourites to leave as the victors. Benevento versus Bologna accompanies Juve in the early kickoffs, which is expected to be a close game. The late kick-off on Saturday sees AS Roma host Inter Milan for the first battle of the big clubs in Serie A this season.
Starting up early on Sunday, August 27 is Torino versus Sassuolo. The away team are having one of their star players, Domenico Berardi, hunted by Roma in the transfer window, and are at long odds of 4/1 to leave their game with Torino with all three points.
Sunday also sees six later games. AC Milan are great favourites to defeat Cagliari at home with 1/5 odds, and Lazio are only marginally expected to win when they travel to Chievo Verona at 21/20. Crotone look to be in for a close battle when they face Hellas Verona on home turf, and Spal will also be given a tough time at home, hosting Udinese.
Napoli host Atalanta on Sunday and are expected to stick alongside the league leaders at 2/5 to win at home. Sampdoria, who sealed a great win last week, are at long 13/4 odds to come away with anything when they face Fiorentina – who were obliterated in the opening game of the season.
With a weekend highlighted by Roma versus Inter, Week 2 of Serie A is set to be another exciting week of Italian football.
