22nd June 2018 – 16:00 GMT
Group D – Volgograd Arena Stadium – TV: BBC
Group D looks hugely competitive and both Iceland and Nigeria will consider themselves strong enough to qualify for the round of 16. Despite their mixed results in the interim period, Iceland will be hoping to replicate their Euro 2016 heroics whilst Nigeria are a young, vibrant side who could cause all kinds of problems for their opponents. With Argentina likely to progress and Croatia looking extremely strong, neither side can afford to drop points in this one.
Nigeria vs Iceland Predictions
Nigeria were far from impressive in their opening game against Croatia and they must bounce back in this tie. They need to show more ambition in the final third if they are to give themselves a fighting chance of progressing from Group D.
Iceland were very impressive against Argentina and looked defensively sound throughout. They got a slice of fortune with Lionel Messi’s penalty miss and will be aiming to build upon their positive start.
Nigeria are unlikely to break through the Icelandic resistance, whilst Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side may not show enough ambition in the final third to secure three points here. A point each seems like a realistic outcome and that can be backed at 2/1 with William Hill.
Nigeria vs Iceland Preview
Jon Obi-Mikel admitted that his side needs to be much better against Iceland. His team were largely underwhelming against Croatia with the European side easing to victory. The Super Eagles didn’t produce much in the final third and they may find it tough to break the Icelandic resistance.
Iceland held Argentina to a 1-1 draw and were mightily impressive once again. They continued their fine form from Euro 2016 and they have put themselves in a decent position in Group D. They will fancy their chances of picking up three points in this tie and will be looking to get the ball to Gylfi Sigurdsson throughout the 90 minutes.
Nigeria vs Iceland Correct Score Prediction
This game is unlikely to be one of the standout ties of the competition and a low-scoring game is entirely possible. Neither side give much away at the back and defences should come out on top. A 0-0 scoreline is deemed the likeliest outcome. It is available at 31/5 with Royal Panda.
Both Teams to Score Predictions
Bwin have priced up Both Teams to Score? No at 7/10 and that looks like terrific value. Iceland only conceded a single goal against Argentina, who possess an embarrassment of riches and Nigeria will offer far less going forward. Can Nigeria break down Iceland? It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely.
