New Names in the England Squad Will be Aiming to Secure a Place at the 2018 World Cup
There were a number of surprises in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, with Burnley duo Nick Pope and James Tarkowski offered the chance to impress on the International stage. Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook also features whilst Alfie Mawson is another new name who could potentially force his way into the manager’s plans for the 2018 World Cup. The latter made six appearances at Under-21 level and has excelled since the arrival of Carlos Carvalhal at the Liberty Stadium. England fans will also be delighted to see Jack Wilshire’s name on the list ahead of friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy at the end of March. Newcastle fans were left disappointed by the omission of both Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles, with the latter being widely tipped for a call-up following his outstanding performances at St. James’ Park.
All of the newcomers will be hoping to force their way into Southgate’s plans for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. England have been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Panama and Tunisia and are priced at 6/5 with William Hill to finish top of their section. The Three Lions can also be backed at 16/1 to lift the trophy in Moscow on July 15th.
888Sport have a number of England specials priced up ahead of the tournament including a ‘Player to Make the 23 Man Squad’ market which features Lewis Cook at 8/1, Nick Pope at 4/1 and James Tarkowski at 5/1. The aforementioned Jamaal Lascelles can be supported at 50/1.
Second favourites Brazil have been dealt a major blow ahead of the 2018 World Cup with Felipe Luis sustaining a leg fracture during Atletico Madrid’s Europa League tie with Lokomotiv Moscow. It is expected that he will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks and his participation in the event has been thrown into serious doubt.
Meanwhile, hosts Russia have lost Alexander Kokorin, with the 26-year old tearing his ACL and he is now highly likely to be unavailable for selection. The Group A side have already lost Viktor Vasin and Georgy Dzhikiya to injury and can’t afford many more casualties. 888Sport have priced them up at 5/2 to be eliminated during the group stage of the tournament.
