Netherlands vs England: International Friendly Preview
Date of the match: March 23, 2018
England continue their preparations for World Cup 2018 with a warm-up match against the Netherlands at the Amsterdam Arena. Gareth Southgate hasn’t been afraid to call up a number of uncapped players who have impressed in the Premier League this season, with Alfie Mawson, Nick Pope, James Tarkowski and Lewis Cook all featuring in the squad. Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal described Mawson’s inclusion as “perfect” and suggested that the defender’s adaptability will allow England to be versatile throughout the summer.
The Three Lions will begin their warm-up campaign against the Netherlands, who failed to qualify for the tournament this summer but are beginning to re-build under Ronald Koeman. The former Everton boss has been tasked with restoring his country’s reputation and ensuring qualification for Qatar 2022. They’ve won their last two international friendlies, beating Scotland and Romania, and are seeking a hat-trick here.
The Netherlands begin as the 6/4 favourites with NetBet but have only won one of their last six friendlies staged on home soil. England have faced some difficult opposition in recent outings, with friendly matches against Brazil, Germany, France and Spain leaving them without a non-competitive victory since June 2016. The Three Lions have been priced up at 28/17 whilst the draw can be backed at 28/13. The last three friendly meetings between these two teams at the Amsterdam Arena have ended all square, with Jermaine Defoe netting a brace during their last clash, which took place eight years ago.
Plenty of High-Profile International Friendlies Across the Weekend
World Cup 2018 hosts Russia take on Brazil on March 23rd, with Tite’s side unable to call upon injured duo Neymar Jr and Felipe Luis. Their opponents, however, are without Alexandar Kokorin. Two of the ante-post favourites for the tournament meet at the Espirit Arena in Dusseldorf, as Germany host Spain. Italy, who failed to qualify for the competition, take on Argentina in a mouth-watering clash, whilst France host Colombia later that evening.
