Liverpool vs Southampton: Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips
Can Liverpool make it six out of six as they welcome Southampton to Anfield? Or can the Saints upset the odds?
Mohamed Salah hasn’t really hit top form as of yet this season but his teammates have more than rallied round. Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino helped the Egyptian last season but the rest of the side sometimes didn’t pull their weight. That’s changed this season and Liverpool are beating opponents as a team – and Southampton could be in for a torrid time.
Danny Ings has really hit the ground running since his loan move to St Mary’s. But with Premier League rules meaning that the striker cannot face his parent club, Southampton will have to rely on Charlie Austin or Shane Long shaking off their persistent injury problems and be on top form for the trip to Anfield.
Liverpool may have won all five of their games this season but their opponents have not been the biggest clubs in the league. Beating Spurs away from home was Liverpool showing that they can beat the top teams as well – and with Chelsea up next it is conceivable that both sides will be on maximum points.
Southampton shocked everyone last season by flirting dangerously with relegation. Only a couple of wins towards the end of the season calmed the nerves for the final day’s fixture against Manchester City. The Saints have started brighter this season and will not want to get involved with a relegation battle. But an away trip to Liverpool will be tough – expect a 3-0 home win.
With plenty of goals being scored – and a new look tighter defence – it is almost gone unnoticed that Liverpool have also kept three clean sheets in their five wins. Much of that is down to new keeper Alisson and the home side can expect to keep that form going against Southampton.
Liverpool are yet to concede a goal at Anfield this season in the league and the visit of Southampton won’t look to change that. Expect one of the home side’s many attacking threats to score in the first half – and for more goals to be added to that tally in the second.
Head to Head
Southampton failed to score in two defeats to Liverpool last season and the last time they were victorious at Anfield was back in 2013 when Dejan Lovren – now at Liverpool – scored the only goal.
1 x 2 Odds
Liverpool have kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with three. Southampton have also managed to limit the amount of goals allowed – but they have also had a problem scoring them at the other end.
Virgil van Dijk has played a major part in the way Liverpool have strengthened defensively this season. The Dutchman has been ever present for the Reds alongside his centre back partner Joe Gomez.
Southampton have already made one trip to Merseyside this season – losing 2-1 to Everton in the second game of the season.
