Defending EFL Cup holders Manchester City travel to Leicester in the last eight but how seriously will Pep Guardiola take the competition with the tightest of title races in the balance?

Predictions

Leicester City would love nothing more than to add a piece of silverware this season to their trophy cabinet as the perfect way to pay respect to owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who tragically passed away in a helicopter crash earlier in the season.

The EFL Cup is arguably their best chance of obtaining a trophy even if they are faced with a Manchester City side who has won two of the last three EFL Cup competitions.

This is because much comes down to how much Pep Guardiola values the EFL Cup this season having already won it last year with his Citizens side.

A packed Christmas schedule and a bitter Premier League battle with Liverpool may mean Guardiola views this tournament as more of a nuisance than a genuine chance for a trophy.

The pair met at the same stage last season and City scraped through 4-3 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 at 90 minutes proving it was a close affair.

The football may not be the prettiest but both teams to score is almost a certainty considering it has happened in five of the last six meetings. Don’t be shocked to see the Foxes wanting it more in a surprise 2-1 home win.

Betting Tips

  • Double chance of Leicester of draw

City are big favourites which is why there is little value there, but Leicester have beaten the Citizens on their home soil as recently as 2016 and only lost on penalties last season, making this one of the best bets with popular betting sites for match value.

  • Both teams to score

A safe bet this one as five of the last six meetings between the two has seen this bet pay out including in the sides League Cup tie this time last year.

Head to Head

Manchester City won 4-3 on penalties almost a year ago after Jamie Vardy struck a 90th minute penalty to level the tie at 1-1 in their last EFL Cup meeting.

Prior to that, they last met in the EFL Cup again in December the 2013-14 season with Manchester City winning comfortably 3-1 at the King Power Stadium.

Stats

  • Leicester City have already won two penalty shootouts this season in order to reach the quarter finals, beating Wolves and Southampton from the spot.
  • Manchester City are seeking their third EFL Cup triumph in just four seasons.
  • This is the third time the pair have met in the EFL Cup last eight since the 2013-14 season.
  • The Foxes have won the competition three times (most recently during the 1999-00 season).
  • Manchester City are seeking a sixth EFL Cup triumph in total, having first won it in 1970.
