Guerrero’s Return Could Make the Difference
Paolo Guerrero hasn’t played international football for eight months but the captain made his return during a friendly match with Saudi Arabia on May 3rd and instantly made an impact. The 34-year old netted twice, highlighting his importance to this Peruvian team. Los Incas won the game 3-0 and look far more dangerous with the Flamengo striker in their team.
William Hill and 888Sport have both priced Guerrero up at 150/1 to be the competition’s top goalscorer and the former Bayern Munich forward already has two Copa America Golden Boots to his name. He could be a worthy outsider in this market.
It’s Peru’s first World Cup appearance in 36 years and Los Incas will be looking to impress. They’ve been drawn alongside France, Denmark and Australia. Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak helped fight Guerrero’s corner but the Aston Villa man may come to regret his sporting behaviour when the two sides meet on June 27th. It was a last-ditch legal appeal which was overturned by the Swiss Federal Tribunal. His ban had already forced him to miss his side’s important qualifiers against New Zealand but Peru have a number of other dangerous players in their squad.
10Bet have priced Peru at 15/8 to qualify for the knock-out round of the 2018 World Cup and they will have their eye on securing a position in the top two. A France/Peru forecast in Group C is available at 5/2 with 888Sport.
As 1/3 favourites, France are expected to dominate this section but Peru could be dark horses and with Guerrero back in the team, they will offer more of a threat and they stand a good chance of progressing to the last 16.
Denmark Draw a Blank Against Their Near-Neighbours
Denmark were unable to break down their neighbours Sweden during the Nordic derby on May 2nd. The Danes were without influential midfielder Christian Eriksen and their lack of creativity was badly exposed in this game. The Spurs midfielder was pivotal in helping his side qualify for the tournament and he is set to return in time for their opener. He is 6/4 with 888Sport to provide the most assists for his team during the 2018 World Cup and that looks a superb bet.
Age Hareide’s side play their final preparation game against Mexico on June 9th and they will need to show more purpose in the final third. Nicklas Bendtner will miss the tournament with a groin injury and has not been included in the squad. Players such as Nicolai Jorgensen and Pione Sisto will be looking to make an impact in Group C and Denmark have been priced up at 13/20 to qualify for the knock-out round.
