Europa League Final – Betting Predictions and Tips

Date: May 16, 2018

Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview, Odds and Betting Tips

Europe’s secondary cub competition concludes on May 16th with an interesting match-up between Marseille and Atletico Madrid. The game will be played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon and will kick off at 7:45pm. There is plenty at stake with the winner automatically qualifying for the group stage of the 2018-19 Champions League. The successful side will also face the winner of the UEFA Champions League in the Super Cup.

Bjorn Kuipers of the Netherlands will referee the Europa League final. He is a regular in this competition and is considered to be the Eredivisie’s most consistent official.

The match will be aired on BT Sport in the UK.

Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview

Marseille will be buoyed by the fact that this game is essentially a home match for the club. Rudi Garcia’s men qualified for the final courtesy of a dramatic extra-time winner from Jorge Rolando. Marseille were trailing 2-0 going into the additional thirty minutes but managed to book their place in the showpiece event in the 116th minute. The French club also beat RB Leipzig, Athletic Bilbao and Braga during the knock-out stage of the competition.

Atletico always looked in control against Arsenal and Antoine Griezmann’s late equaliser at the Emirates was a hugely consequential strike which helped secure their place in the final. They were 1-0 winners at the Wanda Metropolitano and are likely to start as odds-on favourites for this clash. Unfortunately for the Spanish club, head coach Diego Simeone continues to serve his touchline ban and will have to watch the game from the stands.

This is Atleti’s fifth major European final in the last eight years.

Marseille vs Atletico Madrid Betting Predictions

Marseille will have the advantage of playing on home soil but have been priced up as outsiders for this clash. They can be backed at 4/1 with Ladbrokes and are quite well fancied to lift the Europa League trophy.

The French side have a terrible record on the road in this competition but should be helped by this short trip.

Atletico’s defensive record in the competition is admirable and both of their semi-finals ended with fewer than three goals. Under 2.5 Goals is priced at 8/13 to land once again here.

Marseille have a number of hugely talented attacking midfielders with Dimitri Payet and Florian Thauvin both excelling in the competition this season. The latter is priced at 18/5 with 888Sport and looks a decent bet.

Europa League Final Statistics

The Europa League has had a number of different names during its history and there have been 28 different winners of the competition. Twelve teams have been successful on more than one occasion with Spanish sides dominating in recent years. Sevilla have triumphed on five different occasions with the La Liga outfit last lifting the trophy in 2016.

No French side has ever been successful in the Europa League and Marseille will be hoping to end that barren run on May 16th.

The match has only ever been played at a finalist’s home ground on two occasions with the last being in 2005 when Sporting CP lost to CSKA Moscow in Lisbon.

Atletico Madrid were the first winners of the competition, following its Europa League rebrand.

Head to Head Record

These two sides have only met twice before. They were drawn together in the group stage of the Europa League in 2008, with the sides playing out a goalless draw in France and Atletico sneaking a 2-1 win in the Spanish capital.
