Bored of betting on the same old sports? Why not try eSports betting? eSports is competitive gaming played by professional players or teams. The egaming industry is growing at a phenomenal rate and bookmakers are cashing in on its popularity, with many of the top betting sites now offering eSport bets.
But, before opening an eSports betting account there is much to learn, like the games, wagers, and the tournaments.
The tournaments offer the best betting opportunities. The most popular are the League of Legends World Championships, The International: DOTA2 Championships, and Call of Duty World League Championship.
BettingTop10 is here to give you the lowdown on the fastest growing market on the sports betting field.
eSports Betting Odds
If you want to bet on e-sports then you need to know the types of odds and how to read them. Depending on your preferred bookmaker, odds will be displayed in decimals or fractions.
Probably the easier of the two odds to understand, the decimal odds let you work out the probability of a wager by dividing 100 by the decimal odds. For example, say you want to place a bet on the DOTA 2, and you see team ‘For the Win’ are shown at 1.180, and opponents, ‘Team WA000” odds are at 4.510.
For the win – 1.180 = 100 / 1.180 = 84.75% Team WA000 – 4.510 = 100 / 4.510 = 22%
To work out your return on a wager divide 100 by the decimal odds, this will give you the total, your winnings and wager included.
So, say you bet £5 on TeamWA000 to win, it’ll look like this:
£5 = £5 x 4.510 = £22.55
You may also see eSports betting odds displayed in fractions, 6/10 or 11/5 for example. In order to work out the probability, convert the fractional odds into a percentage using the following formula:
6/10 = 10 / (6+10) = 0.625 or 62.5% 11/5 = 5 / (11+5) = 0.3125 or 31.25%
If the number on left is higher than the one on the right, the odds are against you.
Skin Betting vs. Sportsbook Betting
Skin betting (or item betting) is completely unique to eSports, and refers to the betting of virtual items that exist within the game. Skins are usually weapons bought with real-money and can be bet, traded or sold via dedicated skin-betting sites.
The biggest difference between betting for skins and betting at your usual online bookmakers, is that unless you are a gamer with an invested interested in the game, then skin betting isn’t going to benefit you much.
If you are more of a casual gamer, or just interested in making some extra cash, then you’ll be much better off opening an eSports betting account at an online sportsbook.
Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) – A single player controls their own character within a team and they work together to destroy the other team’s buildings.
Real-Time Strategy (RTS) – In RTS games the gameplay doesn’t progress in turns, instead teams work/play at the same time.
First Person Shooter (FPS) – FPS games are gun or other weapon-based combat with a first-person point of view.
Fighting – In fighting games two players control characters in close combat, either hand to hand combat or with weapons.
What are the most popular games?
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) – This multiplayer FPS game is the most popular eSport in the UK.
Defense Of The Ancients 2 (DOTA 2) – DOTA 2 is a MOBA game, hugely popular the world over.
Super Smash Bros. Melee – The fighting game is the best selling game for the Gamecube console.
League of Legends (LOL) – The most popular MOBA game with approximately 100 million active monthly players.
Street Fighter V – The latest in the Street Fighter series won The Game Awards for Best Fighting Game in 2016.
Call of Duty (CoD) – CoD is a FPS franchise first released in 2003 and has been a firm favourite ever since.
With qualifiers for tournaments held regionally all across the world, there are plenty of eSport betting opportunities. Here are the most popular, with a few BettingTop10 tips for your wagers.
League of Legends World Championships (The Worlds)
BettingTop10’s tip for betting on The World’s is to bet on a team you think will make it to the final, instead of picking the winner. It’s easier to be in it than to win it!
The International: Dota2 Championships
Try an accumulator bet for DOTA 2. The odds may be lower but your winnings will be multiplied with little risk.
Call of Duty World League Championship
Again, it makes sense to bet on the player or team you think will be in the final. You’ll get better odds and a better payout than with single match bets.
