England face South Africa in the fourth and final Test match of the series this Friday knowing that a draw will see Joe Root’s men secure a famous victory over the Proteas. The hosts are widely regarded as one of the best Test sides on the planet and a series triumph will help to build confidence ahead of the Ashes in Australia this winter. The omens for England are very good indeed. Trevor Bayliss’ side have won six of their last seven Test matches held at Old Trafford – an exceptional record, to say the least. In their most recent encounter at the Lancashire venue, England defeated Pakistan by 330 runs – and fans will be hoping for a similar result against South Africa. At 21/20 to emerge victorious outright, England are well priced to win the fourth Test. Yes, a draw will be enough but Root will want to send out a message in his first series as captain of the Test side. The England star has been in tremendous form with the bat in recent weeks, scoring a half century in all three of the Test matches so far this series. South Africa will be looking to restore some dignity by drawing the series but they will need to slow England down. With the bat, Bayliss’ side – led by Root – have been sensational this summer and the Proteas will need the likes of Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj to step up and perform well. On their day, South Africa are a very good Test side but England are superior in more or less every department; especially with AB De Villiers absent. It has more or less been the perfect series for Root to shine as captain and the Yorkshire star will once again be central to England’s chances of winning the fourth and final Test at Old Trafford.
