Date: 6th January – 14th January Very few were surprised to see Glen Durrant chalked up as the favourite for the 2018 BDO World Championship, which got underway at the Lakeside on January 6th. The man from Teesside is the defending champion and one of the class players in the field and got off to the ideal start when breezing past Gary Robson in the opening round. He averaged 95 in his opener encountering very few problems against his opponent who hails from Tyneside and setting up a second-round tie against either Daryl Fitton or Justin Thompson. ‘Duzza’ came into the tournament brimming with confidence after knocking out Dave Chisnall in the Grand Slam of Darts at Wolverhampton Civic Hall back in November 2017. He eventually came unstuck against Peter Wright, a man who he had previously beaten in the group stage of the event but missed a number of doubles, allowing the Scot to mount a comeback and progress to the next round. He’s made no secret of his desire to move over the PDC but admitted he will simply focus on one tournament at a time for now. Darts betting is extremely popular throughout the UK and many online bookmakers have priced up this event including 888Sport, who have got Durrant starting as 6/5 favourite, although he may face some stern tests along the way. Dutchman Danny Noppert is another PDC-bound player who eased through his first round clash without dropping a set and he will be determined to make an impression here. Jamie Hughes is also highly fancied with the Welshman expected to progress to the latter stages alongside Lakeside regular Scott Mitchell. Finally, Jim Williams, who has reached the last 16 of this tournament in both 2016 and 2017 is likely to be a match for any player.
